TAS5721: 2 ohms Audio Amplifier with EQ and Limiter

Part Number: TAS5721
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TAS2557EVM, TAS2557, TAS2110, TAS2562, TAS2780, , TAS5729MD, TAS5733L, TAS2563

Hi Experts,

I am trying to help a customer with product selection. He needs help in selecting an audio amplifier (TAS series ideally) featuring:

- 2 ohms of minimum load acceptable

- An EQ section and a Limiter section programmable through Purepath

Please help suggest. Thank you so much.

Best regards,
Gerald

  • Hello Gerald,

Can you provide information on the output power requirement and the supply voltage expected on this customer system?

    best regards,

    Luis

  • Hi Luis,

The customer basically have two 4 ohms speakers that are today powered by a 4.5 Watts output stereo (2x channels) amplifier

They could go for a mono amplifier if it can support these two 4 ohms speakers wired in parallel. In other words a load of 2 ohms on the output

They tested this parallel wiring on the TAS2557EVM, and it seems to perfectly work.

Can you help confirm that TAS3557 is OK, or you could please help find a stereo equivalent of this TAS

    Thank you and best regards,
    Gerald

  • Hi Gerald,

    Let me comment about TAS2557.
Even though their test was OK with the EVM, I would suggest to further test this if they're still considering to use it that way. The main concern is that the minimum specified load resistance is 3.6Ohm (considering tolerance for a 4Ohm load). So placing two of these speakers in parallel would load considerably the output of the amplifier.

Perhaps they could also test by connecting the speakers in series instead of parallel. In addition, I assume speaker protection algorithm is not required for this application, so other devices could be considered as TAS2562 or TAS2110. If you have a higher voltage rail you may also check TAS2780.
In all these cases the minimum load spec is still 4Ohm.

  • Hi Ivan,

Thank you for these 3x references, but they are unfortunately all mono (1x output), and do not seem to contain equalization sections like in the TAS2557. Do you confirm?

Please help advise for a stereo (2x channels) amplifier that contains an equalization section like in TAS2557. Thank you.

    Best regards,
    Gerald

  • Hi Gerald,

Most of the devices I'm aware of are mono, let me check for stereo options. I'll get back with further comments later today.

  • Hi Gerald,

Perhaps some device like TAS5721, TAS5729MD or TAS5733L could be a closer match?
These amplifiers require a higher voltage supply, there are no boosted amplifiers (similar to TAS2557 or TAS2563) that are also stereo.
