TLV320ADC3101EVM-K: Eval Board Shows Up as Unknown Device in Device Manager and ADC3101 CS Software Does Not Detect It

I have connected a TLV320ADC3101EVM-K via USB to a PC and it is not being detected by the ADC3101 CS software. Here's a screenshot:

In Device Manager, the eval board shows up like this:

I have installed and re-installed the ADC3101 SW twice with the same result. The last time as an administrator. This PC is Win 10 64-bit. I have set all of the default switch and jumper settings as described in the eval board manual.

What else should I try to get this eval board detected properly by the ADC3101 software? Thanks.

Hello Jack,

Thank you for reaching out, your steps so far have been good. There should be a second set of switched behind the white wire labels. Please retake a picture with those labels uncovered.

In the meantime, please try running the ADC3101 CS software as admin.

I'll see if I can get someone to take a picture for me, but I did not move that jumper behind the labels (I believe it is for external MCLK) so it should be open.

I did run the EXE as an administrator and took the screenshot. If I do not run it as administrator, the tree does not populate at all.

Is there anything I can do in Device Manager? Is there a specific driver that I can point Windows to associate with this hardware? What should this look like in Device Manager?

Hello Jack,

The ADC3101 GUI looks like the below image when working properly. In the Audio device menu, it enumerates as USB-AudioEVM.

Device manager shows nothing EVM related in "other devices", just these highlighted options.

When selecting View>show hidden devices, my pc shows USB-AudioEVM to be enabled and USB-MODEVM to be disabled.

Please see if it is possible to enable this driver in device manager and select it as the default audio device. The most robust processes would be to disconnect the EVM, uninstall all TI audio drivers and EVM drivers and your PC.

Let me know if this solved your issue. If it didn't please let me know the USB-MODEVM board and BOM revision number (found underneath the ADC3101 EVM) and let me know if you need more information.

Interesting. Here's how my device manager shows up:

So it looks like the audio piece is not getting detected. You mentioned uninstalling the TI audio drivers. Are these included in this installer:

Hi Jack,

The USB-MOD EVM should not need any additional software in order to be recognized by windows. Please let me know the USB-MODEVM board and BOM revision number (found underneath the ADC3101 EVM)?

Also, I tried connecting this to a laptop and am seeing similar behavior. The only difference on the laptop is that in Device Manager, it does show up under audio inputs and outputs:

But also as an unknown device.

I'm assuming these are on the USB-MODEVM board but I can't find any documentation about these pins in particular and don't want to guess. Can you show me exactly which pins I'm supposed to short together?

Hello Jack,

Please disregard the previous instruction. We will try reinstalling the firmware later once we have exhausted all the options.

On the PC that the device is being recognized as USB-MODEVM please ensure the W11 jumper is installed (as always run the GUI as Administrator).

If there is no audio or the USB is not detected by the GUI, uninstall the USB-AudioEVM (or USB-MODEVM) driver in the device manager as shown below.
Then, in the device manager, click “Action > Scan for Hardware Changes” and wait for the USB-AudioEVM (or USB-USB-MODEVM) to re-appear.

If I install the W11 jumper, then the USB-MODEVM is detected only as an unknown device. If I install it, then it will show up as USB-AudioEVM.

I uninstall the W11 jumper and followed your instructions, but with no luck. It always is detected as USB-MODEVM but the USB-AudioEVM does not show up and the application never discovers it.

Please clarify what the device enumerates as with the jumper installed and with it uninstalled? In what state does it enumerate as "Unknown device"? (the SDA and SDL jumpers should be Open)

I'm getting concerned that this board doesn't work in general. I have tried this on two different PCs and I also have a colleague at another site who is having the exact same issue. Is it possible that the ADC3101 daughterboards we received were not programmed or corrupted in some way? Are you able to reproduce what I'm describing?

It looks like this is the case. EVM firmware issues are hard to trace down, and the process for installing/reinstalling the drivers can be tricky. Please see the attached file for installing the EVM drivers. Please let me you have questions on the install process.

It works!!!! I did not even need to go through the firmware update process. The key was setting the switches on the USB-MODEVM per the directions in the document (which are different than the default and what the EVB manual shows). If I follow the directions in the manual, it is detected as an unknown device again and doesn't work with the software.

FYI...Seems like the zip download was a corporate IT issue. I had to use a personal PC off the corporate network to download it for some reason.
