TLV320AIC3120EVM-U: No USB Connection

Loading filter coefficients from Pure Path into a TLV320AIC3120EVM-U via USB from a Windows PC. (Download and Run in the Build menu). The module, which was passing audio at the time, stopped communicating with the PC and the yellow indicator on the module went off. PC now reports Unknown USB device (Device Descriptor Request Failed).

The evaluation module was working perfectly prior to this happening. Only anomaly was on a previous Download and Run it threw up a request to update the firmware on the module to correct an audio level problem. This update failed but the module was still working after the update failure. For this subsequent download I declined the firmware update.

I tried a different PC with a fresh installation of Codec Control. Same problem.

Power supply voltages on the module are OK.

Any suggestions ?

I found that instruction already and tried it out. Unfortunately, after restarting the EVM with the SDA and SCL shorted the USB connection changes but I cannot get my computer to accept the DFU driver supplied in the download. There was some talk in the posts about it being a Windows 10 problem, so I even resurrected an XP box, but the result was the same. When I proceed with DFUTEST.exe "program EVM" I get a failure message and there doesn't seem to be any way to proceed. Any other thoughts ?

I am thinking I will just need to get another EVM. My question now is what caused this to happen, and how do I avoid a repeat. ?

Hi Cotter,

If it fails, try the process from the very beginning again one more time. If it doesn't work it sounds like the firmware update failure may have bricked the controller.

This is the first I've seen of this issue on this particular EVM, but I would stay away from Windows 11 since PurePath Studio isn't supported for that OS. Windows 10 is okay. I would also decline any firmware updates that PPS tries to offer and I would stop the audio chain when redownloading any coefficients.

Hi Jeff,

Thanks again for your support. I agree the failed update appears to have scrambled the eeprom. I am away from the system just now. Will try the recovery procedure again in case I missed something and let you know how I get on.
