TPA3111D1: About minimum load resistance

Part Number: TPA3111D1

Tool/software:

Hello,

My customer is asking minimum load resistance in TPA3111D1.

According to Absolute Maximum Ratings(datasheet page 4), minimum load resistance is 3.2ohm.

If it is less than 3.2ohm, what kind of damage could cause in device ?

According to bellow thread, minimum load resistance is described.

https://e2e.ti.com/support/audio-group/audio/f/audio-forum/1371229/tpa6205a1-minimum-load-resistance-requirement---5r-possible-at-reduced-temperature-power-requirements?tisearch=e2e-sitesearch&keymatch=TPA3111D1%2520minimum%2520load#

"Lowering the load resistance to 5R may increase the current flowing through the amplifier and increase power dissipation,

which may overheat the device. Moreover, lower impedance loads can make the amplifier less stable and degrade THD performance."

Similarly with the TPA3111D1, it may increase the current flowing through the amplifier and increase power dissipation

and may overheat the device. Finally, thermal protection will be activated.

My understanding is correct? Could you please give your opinion on this case?

Regards,

Tao_2199

  • Hi Tao,

You are correct, the same things that were discussed in the linked E2E are of concern here. By using lower impedances you will have higher current, worse thermals, potentially worse performance, and protections will activate.
