Output filter heating up

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TAS5706, TAS5602

Hi Ravi,

I contact you again about TAS5602 and TAS5706. I would like to send you our I2C script file and schematics so that you could confirm that registers for output power stage are correctly configured.

We have made our own prototype now, and we are upset about temperature that increases when PWM output is active (even without any audio signal).

Can I send you document in private way?

thank you.

David

  • Hi David,

Sure, you can send the files via E2E messaging option.

Does the I2C script work well on the EVM setup? Is the thermal rise behavior seen on the EVM setup?

  • Hi, David,

We received your files... The behavior you described is usually due to a problem with the output filter design.

As Ravi asked, have you tried this on the EVM?

Try removing the caps after the inductors to see if that reduces the heat. If it does, then the inductor needs to be changed to a higher saturation current rated one, most likely.

Note that the output load is part of the filter, and you can't run a class-d with no load without additional circuitry. We have a pretty good app note on LC Output Filters - you can find it here.

PS I took the liberty to split this thread into a new question since it's not really related to the previous postings from earlier this year.
