TPA2005D1: Selecting high performance audio amplifier

Part Number: TPA2005D1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: OPA1604, , TPA6211A1, TPA2025D1, TPA2080D1, TPA6205A1, LM48310

Hi,

I am using, OPA1604 high performance audio op-amp, (soundplus series has very less THD and noise figure). Next stage is audio amplifier. Can you suggest  high performance audio amplifier which has low THD as well as noise figure.

Design requirement:

Supply: 3.3V

Load Impedance: 8 ohm

Power : 500mW to 1.5mW

Currently, I am using TPA2005D1, which is a class D amplifier.

Some questions:

Q1) I have learnt that class D amplifier is always inferior compared with class AB amplifier (sound boomer TI). It is only used for power efficiency.

Q2) Can you suggest some better audio amplifier, which can be used in place out TPA2005D1, which can provide high fidelity sound.

Q3) It is difficult for class D amplifier to pass EMI/EMC test.

Regards,

  • Hi Tapas,

Q1) This is true on the old devices as the Class D amplifiers usually produce more distortion than Class AB amplifiers due to the switching frequency of the output device. However, the distortion tends to be very small in the newest Class D amplifiers.
Q2) You could have a look at the following devices: LM48310, TPA2080D1, and TPA2025D1. They are Class D amplifiers with better audio quality than TPA2005D1. Besides, you could have a look at the following devices: TPA6211A1 and TPA6205A1. They are Class AB amplifiers with better audio quality than TPA2005D1.
Q3) Not really, it depends on system's design. But you should take into account that for very stringent EMI requirements, it is necessary to add 2nd-order low-pass LC filter as close as possible to the amplifier's output pins. You can refer the following application reports: SLOA145 and SLAA701A to find information about Filter design.
