Linux: Selection of Audio Codec: Speaker + External Amplifier

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PCM5101A, TLV320DAC3203, PCM5121, TLV320DAC3120, TPA2013D1

Tool/software: Linux

Hi,

We planned to integrate a Analog Speaker(DAC) Device. Below are our requirements,

1. Codec Chipset(No Internal Apmlifier) + External Amplifier.

2. Type : Stereo.

3. No of Digital Input : 2

4. No of Analog Output : 2

5. No of DAC : 2

6. Control Interface : I2C

7. Sampling Frequency : Should support from Min - 8KHz to Max - 96KHz

8. SNR: 106 dB, Typical

9. Bit Resoluction : 16, 24.

10. Should support Volume Control

Could anyone able to help us to reach the product(Audio Codec + External Amplifier) depending upon our above requirements

  • Hi Mohan,

You can use TLV320DAC3203 for the DAC. It is 100dB SNR but it covers all other requirements. If you need higher SNR performance you can look into PCM5101A or PCM5121.
What would be the output power requirement for the external amplifier? Have you already selected this one? Perhaps we can also help you with some power amplifier recommendations.

  • Hi Ivan,

In our earlier desisgn we were using DAC(TLV320DAC3120). It will support upto 1.6W for 8E. But now, we need to derive 2Watt 8Ohm Speaker.
We would need to know can we able to connect a Power amplifier directly at Class-D output of the existing DAC ? Power Amplifier will derive 2Watt/8Ohm Speaker.

Below are our External Amplifier Requirements,

    Speaker Impedance : 8Ohm
    Continious Power : 2W
    THD : 1%"
Operating Temp : -40 to +85C, prefer to use Automotive grade part.
  • Hi Ivan,

Could we get an update on this?

  • Mohan,

For the external amplifier you could take a look at TPA2013D1.
The best option would be to use the HPOUT instead of Class-D outputs from the DAC. HPOUT is an analog signal while Class-D output is a PWM.

  • Hi Ivan,

Thanks for your suggestions on External Amplifier.

I would like to know, suppose if we are selecting a Audio Codec with single I2S interface, does we can able to perform both Recording and Playback simultaneously?
  • Hi Mohan,

Could you please start a new post with the specific part number of the CODEC you will use? This way the responsible team for these devices will be able to help with your questions.
Anyway, you should be able to do Record & Playback simultaneously, since there are separate data interfaces (DOUT & DIN).
