TPA6140A2: right audio OpAm to drive USB Typ C Headset

Part Number: TPA6140A2
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPA6130A2, , TPA6166A2

Hi Audio Team,

my customer wants to drive a USB Typ C Headset for audio output.

We have looked into TIDA-03030.

The question is what would be the best amplifier in their tool to drive the “3.5mm audio jack” for the TIDA-03030.

The idea is that a tool drives the "3.5mm audio jack" will all be implement in the tool - so not a real connector) and  a headset can be connect to the USB-Typ C connector for audio output.Pls see attached draft.

Ideal would be an audio amplifier with I2C control.

Especially for the pure path devices it isn’t clear how the GND signal is handled (because of move to “mid” potential of the audio signal).

Do you have some recommendations on how to drive the audio signal to the TIDA-03030 3.5mm audio jack driving a USB Typ C Headset.

Typical Headsets they are looking in are like:

Typical they have a impedance of 16 or 32ohm.

Best wishes,

Olrik

  • Hi Olrik,

The headphone amplifiers that have I2C control are TPA6130A2, TPA6140A2 and TPA6166A2.
All these three devices are DirectPath, this means that they have internal charge pump. The charge pump is used to generate a negative voltage rail so the output of these devices is centered at 0V or GND (not mid-supply).
TPA6140A2 requires an inductor for its converter (TPA6130A2 and TPA6166A2 don't need it). TPA6166A2 is a more complex device as this one can detect different headset types. TPA6130A2 is the simplest one.
