PCM2902: PCM2902E only working in one channel on newer versions of windows 10

Part Number: PCM2902
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PCM2912,

I built an audio interface with a PCM 2902(E), about 7 years ago. Originally it worked with no problems. But with more recent PCs/versions of windows (eg more recent versions of WIndows 10) it would only record from one of the input channels and would route it to mono, i.e. the one working input channel would be recorded as the same in L and R, but it would "ignore" the other channel. As I am a mere hobbyist, I wondered about solder joint failure somewhere in the analog input signal path. I reflowed all the relevant solder joints with no change evident. I realised I also had a commercially made interface that used the PCM 2900. I found that, again, this would ignore one input channel and route the recording to mono. I tried the commercially made interface with a computer with an older version of windows 10 and it did work in both channels. I tried the home-made interface with an older version of windows 10 and, again, it also works in both channels. So it would appear that there is some issue with the windows 10 driver??

  • Hello,

The PCM2902 USB interface and descriptors are completely hard-wired/coded in the design of the PCM2902.  We have only experienced one or two issues with these products regarding compatibility and our experience is that they generally work on Win10 - to date.  I currently use a PCM2912 board as a sound card for my Win10 PC and it works fine still.

If there is a conflict in the OS, PC hardware, or app level, that no longer agrees with the way the PCM290x devices are interfacing with the UAC 2.0 audio interface then there's not a lot we'll be able to do.  Since the devices use the standard UAC interfaces it would mean a lot of other devices would likely have challenges working with this component as well.  We understand that's probably not the news you were looking for but the USB half of these devices is completely fixed and was designed when they were released so at some point they're going to stop working when/if the interface/audio drivers change.
