I also have a new LMK05318BEVM. Jumpers are set up as per the manual and the IIC is able to find the part but there is no output. The supply current is 220mA and all outputs are dead.  There doesn't seem to be any DC CM bias on any of the differential outputs.  But the Vdd output is correct.  I tried changing the Vdd output from 3.3V to 1.8V but get the same thing.  I have tried the default EVM program and versions that disabled all muting and syncing, but no outputs are active.  Is this just a bad board?   Thanks.

    When you connect to power supply, is current consumption dropping to ~0 when you power down device? Likewise, is the device drawing current?

  • The power supply connected to the board is set to ~4.5V, and shows 0.22A being drawn when the board is powered up.  I have looked at all power rails at the device and they all seem well within spec.  When you ask about current dropping to ~0 when it is powered down are you referring to depressing the PDN switch and looking at current?  I don't remember doing that, but the local regulators, MCU and logic are still running so I don't think it would drop to 0.  I might misunderstand your question however.

    Okay so the device is drawing power then. But yes I want to confirm if communication to device is being done successfully. By pressing the PDN button or in TICSpro you should see an immediate drop in current consumption on the power supply. If no changes are observed, you might be experiencing a communication issue.

  • Vicente, the I2C interface is working fine.  The TICS Pro SW is able to scan and find the device, read / write registers, and read status correctly.  Everything looks fine including APLL1 is locking and PLL2 is not used and status shows it is not locking.  Just no clock outputs on any port.

    Can you share your TICSpro configuration? 

    You said you tried toggling the SYNCN pin to see if your outputs were muted but this didn't result in any change?

  • I thought maybe the outputs were muted for some reason, which can happen during SYNC so I changed the internal settings to eliminate SYNC from muting any output.  I tried the default setting that come with the TICS Pro SW for this EVM, and a modified version, in addition to my custom settings and in all cases there were no clock outputs.  The 48.0048MHz clock input from the XO was present and detected by the device as well.  How do I send you the tcs files?  Is there an email address I can send them to?

  • Vicente, one other thing I should mention that I thought odd was that there was no CM DC bias on the differential clock outputs at the device (prior to AC coupling caps).   Also, the thread that I attached to from Steve (???) indicated he was having what appears to be the exact same problem.  I couldn't see a resolution to that issue since it was taken off line ... do you know if his issue was resolved by any chance and what the issue was?

  • Vicente, I wanted to see if you have any updates on why the LMK05318BEVM I have is not generating any clock outputs with the files I sent you last week?  I am trying to finalize the design around the LMK05318B and need to verify operation on the EVM before I can do that.  Thanks.

    1. Regarding the other e2e thread with the "bad board", I actually received the customer's board and tested it. The device worked as expected and outputs could be seen without modifying the board or shared files. With that in mind, let's go through some debug steps to see what is the issue on your end.
      1. When I load your .tcs file, I can see the 156.25 MHz outputs as expected. There are no concerns with this config. We can use this config for debugging as it should work for the EVM default state.
        1. 2275.Default EVM modified.tcs
      2. Yes, the LMK05318BEVM outputs are AC-coupled and do not have termination populated. 
    2. With 4.5V applied to J35, I read 0.688 A. I agree that 0.2 A reading you get is on the low side, as if the outputs are powered down. If I disable all the outputs, the current reading is 0.268 A.
    3. What is the method you are using to check the outputs (frequency counter, scope)?
    4. Can you please enable BAW_LOCK detect and confirm if this status is checked?
      1.   
    5. Please send me the register dump by following these steps.
      1. Load the previously mentioned modified EVM default file.
      2. Click Soft-Reset Chip
      3. Click Read All Regs
      4. Navigate to File -> Export hex register values

  • Jennifer, thanks.  I will set the BAW Freq. Lock Det and get you the register dump.  I am using a scope to look at the clock outputs.  Can you confirm that this configuration needs no reference clock input (both ref clk 1 and 2 disabled) since the DPLL and APPL2 are not used?  I am relying on the XO and APLL1 to generate all output clocks through the output dividers.

  • Correct. The reference inputs to the DPLL are not required because you are using the device as a clock generator (free-run mode) in the shared config. I confirmed I saw the 156.25 MHz outputs.

    LMK05318B EVM Test B.tcs

    Jennifer, I made the setting change and increased the supply voltage to +5V from +4.5V and after "write all registers" the clocks show up.  Some clocks show up after a "soft reset" but some don't.  It seems like you always have to "write all registers" to get it to work.

    In any case, I changed the configuration to the one we will be using which generates 4 - 500MHz LVDS clocks, 2 - 100MHz CMOS clocks, and 2 - 12.5MHz LVDS clocks.  I have attached the tcs file for this configuration to test on the EVM.  If I load this configuration and "write all registers" it seems to work.  If I do a "soft reset" only some of the clocks are started.  Also we require that this configuration operate after power up reset without SW programming.  To test this I programmed this configuration in the EEPROM and depressed and released the PDN switch on the EVM.  After doing this no clocks were active.  If I did a "soft reset" some clocks were valid.  If I did a "write all registers" then all outputs showed up.  Shouldn't I be able to save my configuration in EEPROM and have all clocks start up automatically with that configuration after depressing and releasing PDN?  I have attached 3 register dumps for the 3 cases where no clocks started up after PDN, the soft reset has some clocks running, and then "write all registers" gets all clock outpus working.  What should I do to get all clock outputs working with my configuration after PDN is asserted and then released?

    Thank you for providing the files. At a glance, I notice that you have SYNC enabled for some of your outputs.

    If you program these settings to the EEPROM, after power down, the outputs may or may not be disabled. This is because the global SYNC enable (SYNC_SW) is not stored in EEPROM. After PDN, you must toggle the SYNC_SW =1 to assert SYNC (outputs disabled) then SYNC_SW=0 to de-assert SYNC (all outputs enabled and synchronized). You can also use the GPIO0/SYNCN pin ((use J7 on LMK05318BEVM) to toggle SYNC.

  • Jennifer, thanks.  I want the outputs to start up in a synchronous fashion (phase aligned) when PDN is released.  Section 9.3.13 in the datasheet states:

    9.3.13 Glitchless Output Clock Start-Up
    When APLL auto-mute is enabled, the outputs will start up in synchronous fashion without clock glitches once
    APLL lock is achieved after any the following events: device power-on, exiting hard-reset, exiting soft-reset, or
    deasserting output SYNC (when SYNC_MUTE = 1).

    From this it looks like maybe I want to clear SYNC_MUTE (set to 0) to ignore the unused SYNCN input. I thought from section 9.3.15 that I may need to leave the specific output CHx_SYNC_EN outputs set to select the APLL1 sync group so those output dividers are synchronized on PDN release but it sounds like you are indicating that the CHx_SYNC_EN controls only apply to the external SYNCN input ... is that correct?  

    Should SYNC_MUTE be set to 0 as well?  After power up, will all outputs start up phase aligned when PDN is released as long as PLL1_P1_SYNC_EN is set?

    I will try these settings today.

  • Jennifer, I believe my issues are resolved.  In the Advanced - Outputs window I set "MUTE_APLL1_LOCK" and SYNC_AUTO_APLL", and cleared "SYNC_MUTE", "PLL1_P1_SYNC_EN", and all "CHX_SYNC_EN" controls and it seems to work.  I can depress the PDN button and when released the outputs appear to be synchronized and generating the correct frequencies.  Thanks.
