LMK04832: Clock jitter cleaner and frequency multiplier component suggestions for low-phase noise clock distribution

Part Number: LMK04832
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CDCE6214, LMX2820, LMX2594, LMX2572LP

Tool/software:

Hello,

I am working on a design at the moment that needs to convert a 100MHz extremely low phase noise clock signal into 200MHz to be used within a clock distribution architecture.

We have been unable to procure an oscillator at 200MHz that meets our strict phase noise performance requirements but have found a more than suitable 100MHz alternative.

What products would TI suggest for such an application of converting 100MHz to 200MHz with minimal additive jitter and phase noise degradation?

Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Hi Josh,
In this case, using something like LMK04832 is an option but a bit overkill given the number of outputs.

We have clock generators such as CDCE6214, but performance of these devices isn't optimal if jitter is ultimate concern and you want this to clock an ADC.

Your best option in my opinion is LMX2572LP as this is a low power RF synthesizer with decent PN performance followed by LMX2594 if you require better performance followed by LMX2820 which has the best output PN we have from any of our RF synthesizers with the price reflecting this performance also.

If you need to fan out this 200MHz clock, LMK04832 can drive an external 200MHz VCXO and then fan this out to all 14 outputs.
I have started using RVx1490U CMOS and am quite impressed with the performance.  I believe 200MHz is no issue for Rakon.
Do you have a specific output format you require, number of output clocks, input clock specs ,etc.?

    Best regards,

    Vicente
