TSW1400EVM with AFE5832EVM: USER_LED5 is off

Part Number: AFE5832EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AFE5832, LMK04821,

Hello,

I am using the TSW1400EVM with the AFE5832 EVM. I try to set up the first test setup like in the AFE5832 Userguide section 4.2: Capturing Analog Input signals with LVDS interface (https://www.ti.com/lit/ug/slou489/slou489.pdf?ts=1641804892305&ref_url=https%253A%252F%252Fwww.ti.com%252Ftool%252FAFE5832EVM). After downloading the firmware and configure the device, USER LED5 and USER LED6 are off and all others are on. I try to capture data in HSDC Pro but the following error messages appear: Read DDR to file TIMED_OUT_ERROR. Instead of an external clock I am using the differential outputs from LMK04821. As USER_LED3/D5 is on, so it is no clocking issue?

I use the following software: HSDC Pro v4.7 and AFE5832 GUI v1.0.0

Hardwaresetup: like in the AFE5832 Userguide with: 5 V (4A) power supply, Signal generator 5 MHz -20dBm on SMA J1, clock jumpers as in configuration 3 with Y2 (figure 63), Jumpers on J41/J53/J57

The settings in the GUI are the following:

Thank you very much for your help

  • Hi,

Thanks for using AFE5832EVM and TSW1400EVM.

Please refer to AFE5832 User's Guide Appendix G on page 82.

    Hope this can help.

Looks like your test board settings are similar to the common issue

so that causes there is no data captured by the DDR on the TSW1400EVM.

    Thank you!

  • Hi, I already tried all that is mentioned in Appendix G. I replugged all the jumpers for the clock and checked their configuration. Also D5 is on and in Appendix G it says this applies when D5 is off. I also checked the current I applied (4A), reconnected the boards several times and reloaded the firmware (AFE5832). I also measured 40 MHz on testpoint T40, when I apply the clock of 40 MHz through the crystal oscillator Y1.

    Thank you for your help.

  • How would I know that I have loaded the correct firmware? Can you please sent me the correct firmware, so that I can ensure that I have the right one loaded to the board? I had some issues while installing the HSDC Pro. Should it be included in this directory: C:\Program Files (x86)\Texas Instruments\High Speed Data Converter Pro\1400 Details\Firmware ?

  • In order to check your PC has correctly recognized whether both AFE5832 EVM and TSW1400EVM

are connected to your PC's USB bus correctly and also detected by your PC, please download a free

"FT_PROG" programming and it can show the PC's directory:

c:\FTDI_chip\FT_Prog\FT_Prog.exe (note: maybe a little bit file location is not the same as yours).

and then please click on 'DEVICES'

and then click on 'Scan and Parse"

    and then you can see:

    "Product Desc: 'AFE5832...' "

could you please let us know what does it show?

    Thank you very much!

  • Hello,

when I start this programm it shows:

What should be the name of the firmware file that I use?

    Thank you very much

  • Also I get the error 5000 quite often right now:

and sometimes this message will pop up:

  • Hi,

since you have got the error message from "TSW1400_"

    Could you also please check:

    c:\FTDI_chip\FT_Prog\FT_Prog.exe

and then please click on 'DEVICES'

and then click on 'Scan and Parse"

    and then you can see:

    "Product Desc: 'TSW1400...' "

    Thank you!

  • Hi,

    Thank you very much!

Looks like your PC can detect these two EVMs correctly right now.

So please double check the AFE5832EVM board jumper connections shown on User's Guide Figure 60 page 49.

Please confirm all your jumpers (shown in red colors) are connected correctly.

    Hope this can help.

    Best regards,

    Chen

  • Hello, I double checked and it is like on Figure 60. Here is a picture of my setup for reference. Also you can see clearly that user_led5/D7 is off.

  • Hi,

    How are you?

and thank you for sending us more information.

Here are two things needed to try:

please try to disconnect J41 jumper connection from AFE5832EVM

if you are using it. also please on TSW1400EVM please try the jumper JP3 connected on 3.0V side.

    Thank you!

  • Hello,

I am doing fine, thank you. I disconnected J41 and changed the position of JP3 as you suggested. This did not resolve my problem. I had a look into the Quartus code of the TSW1400 and this hints me to:

    assign led = ~{host_empty,rdempty,dac_pll_lock,sys_rst4ff_n,spi_ss[1:0]};

this means that led[5] is driven by the signal rdempty

    rd_empty comes from dumpmem_bridge

Do you have any other suggestions why user_led5 is off?

  • Hi,

According to your test report, when you are running TSW1400 GUI (first) and then AFE5832 GUI (later),

then if there is no clock going into TSW1400EVM (please check it using the scope),

then that is because AFE5832 GUI does not set up AFE5832EVM yet.

Please make sure you need to hit "DUT Reset" button and "Initialize Device"

and take time to wait until done. This is very important.

Please check sure one by one and follow the User's Guide carefully.

    Thank you!

  • Hi,

1.) where exactly do you want me to measure the clock and what should I get?

AFE5832 GUI starts automatically after I started downloading the firmware in HSDC Pro. According to the User Guide at this point the User LED 5 should be already on. Then when AFE GUI is up I press DUT Reset and then Initialize. then I do the settings in the AFE GUI according to the User Guide.

2.) So when AFE5832 GUI opens, there should already be a clock (where do I measure this?) or not?

Thank you very much for your help

  • Hi,

Where and when did you order your TSW1400EVM board?

Looks like something happened from TSW1400EVM.

Since TSW1400 is taken charged by HSDC group,

could you please send your question to that group (different group from AFE5832 group) as well?

They can answer the TSW1400 questions for you.

    Thank you!

  • Hello,

we ordered the boards in August 2019 from TI.

A former collegue (has already left) has used the boards for another project and now we reuse the boards.

Where do I find the HSDC group?

    Thank you very much
