ADS1292: Does ADS129x input ESD protection diode can removed or not for reduce PCB area?

Part Number: ADS1292
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS1298

Dear.

I have two concerns as below associated with ADS129x chips from customer of China want to consult product line. Could you please help to confirm?

1.ADS129x needs two diodes for voltage clamps at the inputs. Is it possible to remove those to reduce the PCB size? I think that there will be potential risk to damage the chip by ESD from human body. Am I right?

2.For ADS1298, Does ECG work normally or not when RLD electrode is not connected or drop? I think that customer will get a not correct or in-accuracy test result if RLD electrode was not connected, am I right?

Thank you very much for your help!

  • Hi Bill,

    1. I would still advise having external ESD protection diodes. The ADS internal diodes are only rated for HBM and CDM. This is mainly to protect against manufacturing and assembly ESD events, not end-use ESD events.

    2. Without RLD electrode,

    a) the impedance of the ECG signal chain is limited by the RLD bias resistor which is typically in MOhm range.

    b) ECG inputs are susceptible to power line interference coupling since the mechanism to set body bias is weak (through the bias resistors).
