Dear TI Engineers,
We would like to trial the use of the ADS131E08S ΔΣ ADC to replace another similar device from a different vendor due to it going obsolete.
Could you please assist us and clarify the queries below.
Q1) The ADS131E08S has an internal voltage reference. We would like to use the 2.4V output setting.
What are the Min and Max Specs for the Output Voltage, Accuracy and Temperature Drift? Could you please get us these characteristics, so that we can make an informed design decision.
Q2) Can you confirm our understanding of the relationship between the output word rate (FDR) and the master clock (FCLK). We intend to set the DR[2:0] field to 101 in the CONFIG1 register.
Table 13 on page 39 has the data rate settings.
If we set the FCLK to 1.6384 MHz (1638.4 kHz), can we expect an output data rate of 1600 samples per second (sps)?
If we set the FCLK to 2.12992 MHz (2129.92 kHz), can we expect an output data rate of 2080 samples per second (sps)?
Q3) We intend to use a PGA setting of 2 (two) and bipolar power topology for the Analog section.
We wish to maintain the 5V potential difference between the AVDD to AVSS pins. Also note again that we intend to use the 2.4V internal reference.
Can we set the AVSS and AVSS1 pins to –2V (negative two volts) and AVDD and AVDD1 pins to 3V (three volts)? The reason for asking this is because our existing boards have these power supply voltages for the previous ADC.
Q4) In the datasheet, Table 2 Input-Referred Noise provides some characteristics for a system incorporating a 4V Reference with a 5V Analog Supply.
Can you confirm that there is no issue with utilising a 5V Analog Supply (i.e. 5V differential between the AVDD and AVSS pins) and setting the internal reference to 2.4V? I hope there is no forced use of a 4V reference just because a 5V Analog Supply is used.
Q5) It would seem that the TI ADS131E08S ADC was launched in October 2015. What is the guaranteed lifetime that we can expect from this part? Do you expect that the ADS131E08S will be supported for at least 10 years?
Kind Regards,
Nikhil
Hi Nikhil,
My regular 'support team' for the ADS131E08 are out this week, returning Monday the 20th. I'm trying to see what we can provide for Q's 1, 3 and 4. I'm not sure what impact there will be without a balanced +/-2.5V supply and I do not readily have detail to share for the reference variation. Without MIN and MAX numbers, the implication there is that the values are not production tested. For Q2, Yes - your understanding is correct. For Q5 - we do not 'schedule obsolescence', we'll continue to make the part as long as we can. Please see our Product Life Cycle detail here:
Hi Tom,
Thanks for confirming the understanding on Q2.
Can your support Team advise us on the other questions as well?
Kind Regards
Shashvat
Hello Shashvat,
We've made some good progress and I'm confident we'll have an answer within the next couple of days. I will keep you updated as soon as we get an answer.
Thanks,
-Cole
Hello Shashvat,
Q1
I will messaging directly about specifics of this question. With that being said, I'd highly recommend taking a look at the TIPL ADC video on the Statistics behind error analysis of an ADC system: https://training.ti.com/ti-precision-labs-adcs-statistics-behind-error-analysis
It goes over how most of our specifications fall within a Gaussian distribution and, depending on your tolerance for error, you can multiply the typical specification by a factor (usually 3 or 4 if given in a +/- percentage to represent +/-1 sigma of the distribution). Check out the video for more details.
Q3
We don’t see any obvious issues with a -2V and +3V bipolar supply operation using the 2.4V VREF option. Shouldn’t be any problem for the internal level shifters. As a reminder, make sure to tie VREFN to AVSS = -2V (not to GND) as shown on the EVM and the recommended operating conditions of the datasheet.
Q4
We’ve confirmed with the team that there’s no issues with using a 2.4V reference voltage with a 5V supply.
Let me know if you need anything else.
Best,
-Cole
Thank you, Cole.
These answers are very helpful.
Just confirming that AVSS1 should also be connected to -2V (not GND), correct?
Kind Regards
