ADS1298: ESD test

Part Number: ADS1298

Our customer designed an ECG product using ADS1298. Now doing product certification, the industry requires passing 6KV ESD testing. During the implementation room testing, it was found that static addition of 6kV to the channel input interface or USB interface can cause data errors. These interfaces are protected by adding ESD devices, and the ESD model used on the circuit board is WS6183KS.

Now we hope to solve this problem through both hardware and software solutions.

1. Are there any more suitable ESD devices recommended for testing in terms of hardware? Is there a better recommendation for the placement of ESD devices? Or do you have better ESD testing experience to share with us?

2. Can the software determine if the data is incorrect? If the program knows that the data is abnormal due to ESD interference, can the software reset ADS1298 and restore it to normal working state? The customer can also accept this method.

  • Hi,

    As our engineer mentioned,

"The device itself is only rated for 2kV ESD-HBM and 500V ESD-CDM. For additional ESD protection, external ESD protection diodes need to be included. Has the customer included external ESD diodes? Please share customer schematics."

    ------------------------------------------

    For

    1. we are not ESD and and ESD regulation/standard experts, if customer knows the ESD testing criteria and standards, please open an e2e ticket under TI's ESD product sector, experts there can provide better suggestions and solutions.

    2. We are not software company nor software or algorithm experts. so, we don't have expertise and knowledge answer questions regarding to software and software questions related to algorithms.

Suggest customers to do experiments&tests and do data collection&analysis during any ESD events, and analyze before making decisions and finalize/solidify the software and/or algorithms. All these have to be experimental and empirical data driven from real world tests&experiments.

And, I guess customer is asking for some "ESD detection circuitry or ESD detection algorithms"?

ADS1298 doesn't have these capabilities. So, if customers need those features, customers need to take care of those.

    Thanks

  • <<ADS1298SCH. pdf>>is the circuit, and I have provided it in the form of an attachment.

Also, if we already know that ADS1298 has been interfered with and generated incorrect data, can we reset it by writing its register?

  • Hello, could you give me some more suggestions?

  • Hi,

For " if we already know that ADS1298 has been interfered with and generated incorrect data, can we reset it by writing its register?"

There are couple questions to ask and consider first -

    1. "has been interfered with and generated incorrect data"

Comments: Interfered by what?  An ESD event?   how severe is that whatever interference interfere the ADS1298?? Does it cause any noticeable and/or not noticeable damage of the ADS1298?

Any any noticeable and/or not noticeable damage to the ADS1298 may cause ADS1298 malfunction to any degree, which may lead to noticeable or not noticeable invalid data. Also, any degree of ADS1298's malfunction may lead to operation not proper e.g. the r/w/reset registers mentioned.

In other words, if the ADS1298 was interfered to have any noticeable and/or not noticeable damages, it's customers decision what to do next?

    2. Let's assuming if that interference DOES NOT cause ANY damage to ADS1298 at all, i.e. ADS1298 is GOOD. Then, yes, customer can always r/w/reset the registers and perform the specified operation described in datasheet as long as ADS1298 is GOOD no ANY damage at all.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------

So, to emphasize the logic, two questions to ask and consider are

    1. Do that interferences cause damage or malfunction of ADS1298?

    2. Is the ADS1298 still a GOOD chip with respect to customer's perspectives and needs?

    Thanks
