DAC38RF82EVM: No signal at the DAC output on DAC38RF8xEVM board

Part Number: DAC38RF82EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DAC38RF82, TSW14J57EVM

Hello,

I am begining evaluation of DAC38RF82 chip using DAC38RF8xEVM evaluation board with TSW14J57EVM pattern generator.

I followed the DAC38RF8xEVM User Guide in order to generate a single tone signal at the outputs of the DAC chip but it does not work: nothing is visible at the spectrum analyzer.

Quick Start tab of the GUI:

What I noticed using the GUI is some error message :

For example, after clicking the DAC RESETB Pin button :

Whereas the connection seemed to be correct (green USB LED always lit on the board)...

Another example is the following, at the end of the process after cliking the LOAD button :

The same error message appears after clicking CONFIGURE DAC button or the Reset DAC JESD Core & SYSREF TRIGGER button.

Is it normal to have these error messages ?
For information, after clicking "Ignore and Continue", all seems OK

Can it be a reason to not get any signal at the DAC outputs ?

Version of the GUI : 3.1 (04 February 2020)

By advance, thanks for your help.

  • Hi Alain,

These errors most definitely will result in no signal output. The DAC is not being programmed since the FTDI link is being intermittent. If you are connected using a usb hub, please bypass it and try directly connecting to pc. If already connected to a pc directly, please try a different usb port. This “FTDI device not connected properly” should not appear.

    Thanks, Chase

  • Hi Chase,

I did not use any USB hub, the board is directly connected to the PC.
I tried all the USB port of this PC, unfortunately with the same result.
I also installed the GUI software on another PC, again connected directly to the board. It did not improve anything..

When launching the GUI software, the following message occured:

But when after clicking Ignore and Continue button, the connection with the board seems OK: green information HARDWARE CONNECTED at the bottom.

But the same error occured when resetting the DAC:

Is there any checks I can made on the evaluation board about the FTDI connection ?

    Thanks,

    Alain

  • Hi Alain,

No, there are no checks other than this message which indicates the connection has been lost. Is it possible to try another cable? If you can and that does not fix anything, then you will have to return the device to wherever it was purchased and ask for a new one unfortunately.

    Thanks, Chase

  • Hi Chase,

As you can imagine, the use of another cable did not fix anything.

For your information, I measured the current consumption of the DAC evaluation board (powered in 5V).
At startup, this is 810 mA and after the programming procedure, this is 1210 mA and the LED D9 and D10 lit when the button "Send" is clicked on the High Speed Data Converter Pro GUI.

Does it mean that the programming of the DAC is not totally wrong ?

But, if we face a hardware issue, there is probably nothing to do but replace the board.

If you have any idea before I send the board back, I can try.

    Thanks,

    Alain

  • Hi Chase,

I checked, the DAC38RF8xEVM evaluation board has been purchased on your website (order number T04593993).

Please, give me the procedure in order to return it and to get a new one.

    Thanks,

    Alain

  • Hi Alain,

I'm not sure about the process. Let me try to find some info on this.

  • Hi Alain,

I am taking this thread offline. Please look out for an email.
