ADS131A04: Single ended analog input configuration

Part Number: ADS131A04

Hi,

I am intending to use the ADS131A04 for a 3 channel data acquisition system. The sensor is a Tri-axis accelerometer. The outputs of the accelerometer are single ended. Can I use the ADS131A04 to acquire single ended data ? What would be the configuration ?

I intend to connect AIN-N to ground and just use the AIN-P inputs to connect to the accelerometer. The negative charge pump will be enabled.

Please advise.

Thanks

  • Hi,

The ADS131A04 should be able to make single-ended measurements. However, the ADC is really differential, and the output data will always be differential, with a two's complement format. When you use the ADC with AIN-N connected to ground, you should only get positive results (with maybe some small negative results because of the possibility of a negative offset voltage).

I did have a few other questions and comments. If you're only making single ended measurements, you don't need to use the negative charge pump. You should be in the input range as long as the input signal is within the AVSS and AVDD, and AVSS is connected to ground. What accelerometer do you intend to use? I wanted to get an idea of what sort of resolution and data rate you might get, and what sort of performance you are expecting.

  • Hi Joseph,

    Thank you for the answer.
The accelerometer is going to be from the 834M1 family from TE connectivity. Both ADC and sensor will be powered at 3.3V (AVDD=3.3V, AVSS=GND). I don't think I will need to enable the negative charge pump, but this was the correct option I found on the datasheet (last option of figure 104).
