AFE5832EVM: Inquiries regarding real-time imaging for ultrasonic AFE

Part Number: AFE5832EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AFE5832

Hello, I am working on developing and commercializing a novel ultrasonic transducer technology. To validate its performance, I am looking into commercially available solutions to develop an extendable platform for real-time imaging using these transducers. For the receiving component, the AFE5832EVM board looks to be a promising solution. I have a few initial questions so I can understand its use:

1. Of crucial importance is real-time data capture. Using the software interface and the additional TSW1400EVM, is it possible to get data from the transducers in real-time? And is it possible to get raw data before any software post-processing?

2. The specs for the TSW1400EVM data capture board say it only has eight channels. If we want access to all 32 channels of the AFE5832EVM, will this be possible with a single TSW1400EVM board?

3. Our device will be used for in-air applications at lower frequencies than typical medical devices (our current transducers operate at 300kHz). New transducers can be fabricated to operate at another frequency, but will the AFE5832EVM work at 300kHz?

Thanks in advance for the assistance!

  • Hi,

Thanks for asking questions for AFE5832EVM.

First I can briefly answer your question 1 and 2.

I will continue to forward your question 3 to our system engineer.

Yes, using TSW1400EVM, you can just capture raw data (including all  32 channel raw data)

in your computer. Then you can do any kind of data processing on your own.

Of course, you can use TSW1400 GUI to do data processing on your PC as well.

Also where did you see the specs from TSW1400EVM about only 8 channels allowed at a time?

Could you please let us know?

    Thank you so much!

For the 3rd question about the signal frequency,

I need to contact with our engineer and we will let you know very soon.

    Thank you!

    Best regards,

    Chen

  • Hi,

For your 3rd question about the signal frequency,

    our system engineer replied:

    ========

    300KHz is ok thanks

    Thank you!

    Best regards,

    Chen

  • Hi Chen,

I had a few more detailed questions I was hoping you could answer.

Firstly, in regards to the restriction to eight channels, it is listed in the features of the TSW1400EVM - "up to 8 simultaneous channels". Will we be able to receive data from all 32 channels of the AFE5832EVM simultaneously, or are we restricted to only eight at one time? If we are restricted to eight channels, can we sample all 32 in a lossless fashion, and is there a guide for achieving this easily?

Secondly, is there a guide you could provide us with for accessing the data directly from the TSW1400EVM in a streaming fashion? The user's guide is not clear on this, and a fast setup is very desirable for us. We would like to be able to directly process this data using Python or a similar language.

    Thanks for your help!

    Best regards,

    Braeden

  • Hi,

Here are the reply to your questions:

    =============

The TSW1400EVM supports 16 LVDS lanes (This is a typo in the TSW1400EVM product folder).

32 channel data can be received with the combination of AFE5832EVM and TSW1400EVM.

AFE5832 packs the 32 channel data unto the 16 LVDS lanes by default.

Continuous streaming is not supported. This is due to the limitation in the USB throughput.

But continuous capture is supported which implies there will some delay between captures.

Automation using tools like C, Matlab and python is also supported.
Please refer to the Automation DLL manual and examples that would be located in the HSDC Pro Installation directory:

    “C:\Program Files (x86)\Texas Instruments\High Speed Data Converter Pro\HSDCPro Automation DLL\Manual and Examples”

    Thank you!
