DLPDLCR4710EVM-G2: Image cropped on 4710 EVM (displayed: 1280 x 720p, Sent: 1920 x 1080p)

Part Number: DLPDLCR4710EVM-G2
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DLPA3005, DLPC3439, DLPLCRD-GUI

Hi Lori,

Thanks for your reply.

I can see that the displayed image is 1280x720p as that's what the program is saying (picture below). I also have my own code that checks for resolution and it prints out the same number (2nd picture below).

As you can see in the picture below, the image sent is 1920 x 1080 and then it gets cropped to 1280 x 720 but it's not possible to change this parameter for the 4710 EVM as explained in the asterisk (which is the model that I have).

If the device is sold as full HD it should be displaying full HD not cropping the image, do you know a way this can be changed?

Many thanks,

Valentina

  • Hello Valentina,

Welcome back to the E2E forum and thank you for your interest in DLP® technology.

This is peculiar. You rightly point out that full HD resolution should be available for the EVM.

Would you mind checking the system software and flash versions of the firmware on the EVM? Also, what does your dmd.getSize() return (as in what op-code is being used)?

    Regards,

    Austin

  • Hi Austin,

    Many thanks for your reply.

Please see the system and flash versions below:

The dmd.getSize function takes the resolution from the video frame it gets, you can find the full code by Fabien Baron on github (linked here, and the full repository is here)

    Many thanks for your help.

    Regards,

    Valentina

  • Valentina,

    You are welcome.

Can you say where you receive this firmware? The latest images available on the TI DLP® Pico Firmware Selector Tool are version 7.7.1 with a System Software Version of 4.4.2. Are you working with an TI engineer?

Also, please try flashing the latest firmware image on the tool for your configuration and let us know if this corrects the issue.

    Regards,

    Austin

  • Hi Austin,

When I try to flash with the image you linked it tells me it's not for the right device, although I do select the right image ( DLPC3439 controller with DLPA3005 PMIC and everything else default), so I don't understand what I can do for this.

I was able to update it to version 7.3.2 with System Software Version 4.1.0, still not the latest version and the same problem remains.

No I am not working with any TI engineers, the firmware I had was the one you get when you download the software firmware and GUI from the EVM4710-G2 webpage.

    Many thanks for your help.

    Regards,

    Valentina

  • Hello Valentina,

Can you please try to use the DLPDLC-GUI to reflash the EVM with latest image version 7.7.1?

    Regards,

    Lori

  • Hello Lori,

I have done this as you suggested and I now have firmware version 7.7.1 (latest) and EVM software version 4.2.2.

With this version I can't seem to use any command in the 'advanced' tab, so when I try to get the image size or set the source to External Input Mode an error comes up saying to make sure the EVM is connected and working (see screenshots below)

The EVM is connected as it's projecting light and can act with External Input Mode as demonstrated in the picture below, where I am using the projector as a 2nd monitor, and my desktop gets displayed, however the image is upside down (note the task bar at the top instead of bottom)

Any suggestions? Are you able to help?

    Many thanks,

    Valentina

  • Hello Valentina,

It seems like the output image doesn't appear to be cropped after you updating the firmware to v7.7.1.

Now you can switch back to DLPLCRD-GUI and try to send any commands.

For image flipping. you are be able to use Write Display Image Orientation (14h) to flip short and/or long axis image.

    Regards,

    Lori

  • Hi Lori,

Many thanks for your help. No it's still cropped, please see picture below:

and the default input image size and auto framing information are still 1280 x 720p, if I change them the output is cropped/pixelated as shown above, are you able to help?

    Many thanks,

    Valentina

  • Hello,

Sorry I also wanted to add I have noticed it's flagging up a 'command error' on the information tab as shown below:

Do you know how I could troubleshoot this?

    Many thanks,

    Valentina

  • Hi Valentina,

The command error is not much of a cause for concern. It may be a lack of an acknowledge bit or similar. More information can be found about the failing command (if it persists) by issuing a Read Communication Status command from the Status menu in the advanced GUI.

Please allow us time to further investigate this and get back to you.

    Regards,

    Austin

  • Valentina,

We are not experiencing these same issues on our EVMs. Would it be possible to send an image of the setup for the video front end?

    Regards,

    Austin

  • Hi Austin,

Of course, what do you need to see? just the settings on the EVM's software interface?

    Regards,

    Valentina

  • Valentina,

I mean to ask for the image file (.png, .bmp, .jpeg, etc.) that was being streamed to the 4710EVM, but I just noticed the windows bar in your images above. It seems you are using the EVM as a display.

Would it be possible to share your display settings that are being sent into the EVM instead?

    Regards,

    Austin

  • Hi Austin,

Yes I am using it as a 2nd display, these are the settings:

I also ran the Read command to understand better the error that's flagging up and it says there is a "I2C invalid command error" with "I2C command error opcode = 16".

    Any help is appreciated.

    Many thanks,

    Valentina

  • Hello Valentina,

The resolution setting in your computer is 1920x1080 which is correct.

I will need to look into more with the team and get back to you next week since we are not experiencing the same issue on our EVMs.

    Regards,

    Lori

  • Hello Valentina,

Here is one more thing I would like to check with you. Can you please share the input frame rate on your computer?

In display setting, select the screen number that to be sent into the EVM as a display. Then, in the Advanced display setting, there is a refresh rate (Hz).

DLPC3439 supports input frame rate at 60Hz for 1080p resolution.

    Regards,

    Lori

  • Hi Lori,

Please see below the refresh rate:

    Regards,

    Valentina

  • Hi Valentina,

    Thank you for the information!

It's hard to determine the cause of the problem since we haven't seen this experience on our EVMs.

Do you have other computer and HDMI cable to operate this feature by any chance? It might be a good try.

    Regards,

    Lori
