DLPDLCR230NPEVM: Compatibility with waveguide for Head Mounted Display application

Part Number: DLPDLCR230NPEVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DLPDLCR2000EVM, TIDA-01473

Hello,

I am looking to design and build a Head Mounted Display using DLP technology. To make the system feasible I will need to use waveguides rather than a combiner screen and was wondering whether the DLPDLCR230NPEVM evaluation module is a suitable product for this?

Also, are the hardware size dimensions below for this product in inch or mm?

Thank you!

  • Akshay,

DLP technology is certainly capable of this application. To achieve near-eye display functionality with our EVM you would need to first remove the projection lens and then add your own collimating lens which should be an eye-piece design to get good performance.

I would recommend contacting one of our optical module manufactures as this is a question for them. A list can be found at www.ti.com/.../optical-module.html

unfortunately we don't have an optical module manufacture that supports this DMD. I apologize for the inconvenience

    Regards,

    Arthur Brown

  • Ashkay,

You could also contact the OEM for the optical engine on this EVM currently YoungOptics, and see if there are any options available.

Dimensions for the attached figure are in mm

  • Hello Arthur,

Thank you for the swift response, very helpful!
After researching further, I have decided to opt for the DLPDLCR2000EVM as it is of lower power consumption and more appropriate for my application. I will contact the relevant OEM for the optical module from the list you have provided, regarding collimating lens designs.

I am using the TIDA-01473 reference design for this chosen EVM. Under the technical documentation for it, I can't seem to find a CAD model for the design? There is a folder for it, but when I download it, it doesn't have a CAD file within. Would be really helpful if I could get that, please.

One last question, do you have any recommended waveguide manufacturers I could contact ?

    Thanks in advance!

    Akshay

  • Akshay,

I would first recommend you contact YoungOptics as they supply the optical engine currently. other than that the list of manufactures we recommend is limited to the list that was linked earlier.

in the TIDA-01473 reference design there is an allegro .brd file  which should be the pcb cad file for the EVM. have you opened this file and is it not what you need?

Please give me a day or two to talk with our hardware team to see if we have any other CAD files available for this EVM.

    Best Regards,

    Arthur Brown

  • Hello Arthur,

I am looking for the CAD of the optical module that sits on top of the PCB, I'm currently using a simple extruded model using the drawing provided in the user guide, so having a more representative CAD file would be really helpful. Thank you for looking into it.

    Best regards,

    Akshay

  • Hi Akshay,

The optical module for this EVM is supplied by Young Optics so it is recommended to contact them for the CAD files. We cannot provide these documents at this time. Their email contact is here: young_optics@list.ti.com

    Thank you,

    Chris
