Linux configuration am3892 based board

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AM3892, DAC7512, PMP, TPS65010, TPS65910, BQ24022, LP3971, LP3972, TPS65023, TLV320AIC23B, TVP5150, TVP7002, THS7303, DA8XX

Hello,

I have custom board, based on TI am3892 processor. I managed to load Linux kernel + Arago FS on it.

The board's design is very similar to DM816x/CA816x/AM389x EVM but there are some valuable differences. For example we use other ethernet physics.

There is no driver for our ethernet in EVM's linux kernel config.

Could you provide some kind of guide how to install ethernet driver?

Another question is to execute HDMI video output. Which linux kernel modules should I additionally install? Syslynk, vpss? Could you also provide any guide?

The last question is about NAND. There is there nand chips on board, each has it's own chip select. By default we see only one nand device (in u-boot).

How to connect two other nand chips?

Best regards,

Anton

  • Hi Anton,

    Let us start with the ethernet physic (PHY) driver install question.

    Please refer to the following wiki page:

    http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/TI81xx_PSP_Porting_Guide#Writing_a_custom_PHY_driver_in_Linux

    Including the driver in the build

    • Add entry into the "drivers/net/phy/Kconfig" under "MII PHY device drivers"
    • Edit the "drivers/net/phy/Makefile" to include compilation of the PHY driver file
    • Invoke kernel menuconfig to select the PHY driver to be built into the kernel

    "Device Drivers"->"Network device support"->"PHY Device support and infrastructure" - here the custom PHY driver should be selected.

    The kernel documentation "{EZSDK}/board-support/linux-2.6.37-psp04.04.00.01/Documenation/networking/phy.txt", explains this in section "Writing a PHY driver".

    PHY Device Drivers

    With the PHY Abstraction Layer, adding support for new PHYs is quite easy.  In some cases, no work is required at all!  However, many PHYs require a little hand-holding to get up-and-running.

    Generic PHY driver

     If the desired PHY doesn't have any errata, quirks, or special features you want to support, then it may be best to not add support, and let the PHY Abstraction Layer's Generic PHY Driver do all of the work.

    Writing a PHY driver

     If you do need to write a PHY driver, the first thing to do is make sure it can be matched with an appropriate PHY device. This is done during bus initialization by reading the device's UID (stored in registers 2 and 3), then comparing it to each driver's phy_id field by ANDing it with each driver's phy_id_mask field.  Also, it needs a name.

      Here's an example:

       static struct phy_driver dm9161_driver = {
         .phy_id         = 0x0181b880,
         .name           = "Davicom DM9161E",
         .phy_id_mask    = 0x0ffffff0,
         ...
       }

     Next, you need to specify what features (speed, duplex, autoneg, etc) your PHY device and driver support.  Most PHYs support PHY_BASIC_FEATURES, but you can look in include/mii.h for other features.

     Each driver consists of a number of function pointers:

       config_init: configures PHY into a sane state after a reset.
         For instance, a Davicom PHY requires descrambling disabled.
       probe: Does any setup needed by the driver
       suspend/resume: power management
       config_aneg: Changes the speed/duplex/negotiation settings
       read_status: Reads the current speed/duplex/negotiation settings
       ack_interrupt: Clear a pending interrupt
       config_intr: Enable or disable interrupts
       remove: Does any driver take-down

     Of these, only config_aneg and read_status are required to be assigned by the driver code.  The rest are optional.  Also, it is preferred to use the generic phy driver's versions of these two functions if at all possible: genphy_read_status and genphy_config_aneg.  If this is not possible, it is likely that you only need to perform some actions before and after invoking these functions, and so your functions will wrap the generic ones.

     Feel free to look at the Marvell, Cicada, and Davicom drivers in drivers/net/phy/ for examples (the lxt and qsemi drivers have not been tested as of this writing)

    Regards,

    Pavel

  • Hi, Pavel

    Starting with PHY is a great idea.

    Exploring guide you've provided I've found in linux kernel config some Micrel PHYs drivers features. I switched on that features and rebuilt linux kernel. So, as I understand since that driver is involved in linux kernel and doesn't appears as separate kernel module, I don't need to make changes in my root fs for the present. Am I right?

    Now, during linux loading I receive the message represented below:

    Configuring network interfaces... No state is present for card EVM
    Found hardware: "" "" "" "" ""
    Hardware is initialized using a generic method
    No state is present for card EVM
    ifconfig: SIOCGIFFLAGS: No such device

    Is there any way to use Generic PHY Driver? Or write my own driver only?

    Best regards,

    Anton

  • Hi, Pavel

     Hm, I found an interesting C source file drivers/net/phy/micrel.c it seems like it supports my PHY.

    Support : ksz9021 1000/100/10 phy from Micrel
     ks8001, ks8737, ks8721, ks8041, ks8051 100/10 phy

     Is it possible to include this driver support in linux kernel config?

    (linux kernel config..) Device drivers -> network device support -> PHY Device support and infrastructure -> Driver for Micrel PHYs
    Does it that point? I switched it on and received that log:

    Configuring network interfaces... No state is present for card EVM
    Found hardware: "" "" "" "" ""
    Hardware is initialized using a generic method
    No state is present for card EVM
    ifconfig: SIOCGIFFLAGS: No such device

    By the way, using other config I received log:

    Configuring network interfaces... PHY 0:01 not found
    net eth0: could not connect to phy 0:01
    ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready

    Then set up net:

    ifconfig eth0
    eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:18:31:88:37:82
    inet addr:192.168.51.198 Bcast:192.168.51.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
    UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
    RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
    TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
    collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
    RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B)
    Interrupt:40 Base address:0x8000

     but when I trying to up interface:

    root@dm816x-evm:~# ifconfig eth0 up
    PHY 0:01 not found
    net eth0: could not connect to phy 0:01
    ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready

    Does it mean that driver is not correct?

    Best regards,

    Anton

  • Anton,

    I will need some time to investigate this. Meanwhile, you can check the below e2e thread:

    http://e2e.ti.com/support/dsp/davinci_digital_media_processors/f/717/t/231135.aspx

    Best Regards,

    Pavel

  • Hi, Pavel

    OK, no problem, I will wait. Thanks for your useful link, I will take a look.

    Meanwhile, I'm exploring those micrel.c and it looks like linux kernel module is created:

    module_init(ksphy_init);
    module_exit(ksphy_exit);
    MODULE_DESCRIPTION("Micrel PHY driver");
    MODULE_AUTHOR("David J. Choi");
    MODULE_LICENSE("GPL");

    Doesn't it mean that I should compile this module and pack it into target filesystem and then load in runtime?

    Best regards,

    Anton

  • I found some info here also:

  • Hi Anton,

    From reading the wiki and e2e threads, I think you need first update the u-boot for the new PHY. And I think you should try first with the generic PHY driver. This is what we have regarding u-boot update:

    Writing a custom PHY driver in UBOOT

    Include the PHY registration in "drivers/net/davinci_emac.c". This is in davinci_emac_initialize()

    Did you update something in u-boot so far? Can you provide the u-boot console messages?

    Regards,

    Pavel

  • Pavel,

     I thought that since I use SD-card for linux booting and do not use tftp, it is not neccessary to implement my PHY's support in u-boot, only in kernel. So, was I wrong?((

    I didnt't make some changes related to emac driver in u-boot source code .

    About log. I investigated u-boot source file you've pointed to.  Normal log should contain a string like: 'Ethernet PHY:....."). My log doesn't contain thar string so it means that davinci_eth_phy_detect() or davinci_eth_phy_read()  functions failed.

  • Anton,

    I contacted our Ethernet driver experts with these questions. I will report here when I have something.

    I think we can use Generic PHY driver (not Micrel). And this is based on the fact that both my u-boot and linux kernel are using Generic PHY driver (not LSI ET1011C), and everything works fine.

    Meanwhile, your u-boot report looks strange for me. From what I understand, you do not modify it, correct? But by default, the u-boot is using "Generic PHY" ethernet driver. Here is what I have:

    Net:   <ethaddr> not set. Reading from E-fuse
    Detected MACID:40:5f:c2:63:a2:30
    Ethernet PHY: GENERIC @ 0x01
    DaVinci EMAC

    And this is the source code:

    u-boot-2010.06-psp04.04.00.01/drivers/net/davinci_emac.c

    /*
     * This function initializes the emac hardware. It does NOT initialize
     * EMAC modules power or pin multiplexors, that is done by board_init()
     * much earlier in bootup process. Returns 1 on success, 0 otherwise.
     */int davinci_emac_initialize(void)
    {
        u_int32_t    phy_id;
        u_int16_t    tmp;
        int        i;
        struct eth_device *dev;

        dev = malloc(sizeof *dev);

        if (dev == NULL)
            return -1;

        memset(dev, 0, sizeof *dev);
        sprintf(dev->name, "DaVinci EMAC");

        dev->iobase = 0;
        dev->init = davinci_eth_open;
        dev->halt = davinci_eth_close;
        dev->send = davinci_eth_send_packet;
        dev->recv = davinci_eth_rcv_packet;

        eth_register(dev);

        davinci_eth_mdio_enable();

        davinci_eth_phy_read(active_phy_addr, PHY_CONF_REG, &tmp);
    #endif
        return(1);
    }

    In my case (DM816x/AM389x EVM), as I have LSI ET1011C ethernet PHY, the program flow is switching to the default state "Generic PHY".

    From your log, u-boot does not initialize neither Micrel PHY nor Generic PHY driver! Can you check why.

    Regards,

    Pavel

  • Anton

    In Kernel menuconfig please follow below steps to select micrel phy driver.

    In menuconfig,
    Device Drivers  --->
    [*] Network device support  --->
    -*-   PHY Device support and infrastructure  --->
    <*>   Driver for Micrel PHYs (select twice so that the driver is built-in inside kernel)

    After compilation please boot the kernel and provide the davinci_mdio logs which will be similar to the below logs

    davinci_mdio davinci_mdio.0: davinci mdio revision 1.6
    davinci_mdio davinci_mdio.0: detected phy mask fffffffd
    davinci_mdio.0: probed
    davinci_mdio davinci_mdio.0: phy[1]: device 0:01, driver unknown

    For generic phy driver driver will be shown as unknown, since micrel phy driver is inbuild then in the above log it should show as driver Micrel KS8051

    When you are successful with the above steps, rest phy driver will be taken care.

    Can you also provide the kernel log so that i can help you if you could not succeed?

    Regards
    Mugunthan V N

  • Mugunthan,

    I've switched on Micrel PHY's support in menuconfig as you adviced, but I couldn't receive davinci_mdio logs.

    In linux kernel config I also switched off PCI support and switched on Ethernet 10/100 support in device drivers.

    Here I provide all the log u-boot + linux kernel

    Best regards,

    Anton

  • Hi, Pavel

    I've added debug printf to this source file:

    /* Find if a PHY is connected and get it's address */
    if (!davinci_eth_phy_detect()){
         printf("Phy detect error\n");
         return(0);
    }

    /* Get PHY ID and initialize phy_ops for a detected PHY */
    if (!davinci_eth_phy_read(active_phy_addr, PHY_PHYIDR1, &tmp)) {
         printf("Get phy id high word error\n");
         active_phy_addr = 0xff;
         return(0);
    }

    phy_id = (tmp << 16) & 0xffff0000;

    if (!davinci_eth_phy_read(active_phy_addr, PHY_PHYIDR2, &tmp)) {
         printf("Get phy id low word error\n");
         active_phy_addr = 0xff;
         return(0);
    }

    phy_id |= tmp & 0x0000ffff;

    Log means that  davinci_eth_phy_detect () fails. I will investigate this issue deeper.

    UPD: i've gone deeper and I explored that it fails on code block:

    phy_act_state = readl(&adap_mdio->ALIVE) & EMAC_MDIO_PHY_MASK;
    if (phy_act_state == 0){
      return(0); /* No active PHYs */
    }

    UPD2: hardware engineer said there is some troubles between mdio and phy and we decreased MDIO clock frequency from 2MHz to 1Mhz  in file include/asm/arch/emac_defs.h using macro

     #define EMAC_MDIO_CLOCK_FREQ   (1000000UL)

    but it didn't help =(

    Now u-boot log looks like:

  • Hi, Pavel

    I managed to receive same log as u in u-boot:

     Net: <ethaddr> not set. Reading from E-fuse
    Detected MACID:0:18:31:88:37:82
    Ethernet PHY: GENERIC @ 0x07
    DaVinci EMAC

    The problem was that on my board MDIO address of connected PHY was 0x07, not 0x01 as on EVM board.In u-boot sources PHY MDIO binary mask was set as (1<<1). And it caused a situation that when software checked ALIVE MDIO register, it checked only 1st bit. While alive bit for PHY on my board was 7th. To solve this problem I changed u-boot source file include/asm/arch/emac_defs.h :

     /*TODO: verify Phy address */
    #define EMAC_MDIO_PHY_NUM (7)  // (1) was here
    #define EMAC_MDIO_PHY_MASK (1 << EMAC_MDIO_PHY_NUM)

    have you got any ideas if it possible to have same problem in linux kernel?

    Best regards,

    Anton

  • Hi Anton,

    I think it is possible. Can you check whether your code is executing the davinci_mdio_reset() function from the

    linux-2.6.37-psp04.04.00.01/drivers/net/davinci_mdio.c file :

    static int davinci_mdio_reset(struct mii_bus *bus)
    {
        struct davinci_mdio_data *data = bus->priv;
        u32 phy_mask, ver;

        __davinci_mdio_reset(data);

        /* wait for scan logic to settle */
        msleep(PHY_MAX_ADDR * data->access_time);

        /* dump hardware version info */
        ver = __raw_readl(&data->regs->version);
        dev_info(data->dev, "davinci mdio revision %d.%d\n",
             (ver >> 8) & 0xff, ver & 0xff);

        /* get phy mask from the alive register */
        phy_mask = __raw_readl(&data->regs->alive);
        if (phy_mask) {
            /* restrict mdio bus to live phys only */
            dev_info(data->dev, "detected phy mask %x\n", ~phy_mask);
            phy_mask = ~phy_mask;
        } else {
            /* desperately scan all phys */
            dev_warn(data->dev, "no live phy, scanning all\n");
            phy_mask = 0;
        }
        data->bus->phy_mask = phy_mask;

        return 0;
    }

    Can you check if the above function is called and whether the phy is detected from within the linux kernel.

    Regards,

    Pavel

  • Pavel,

    I checked this issue using debug print, and it seems like this function doesn't called.

    Could you specify the source file from where it is called for me to continue debug?

    Best regards,

    Anton

  • Anton

    I don't see any of the Davinci MDIO or Davinci EMAC logs in the kernel logs that you have provided. Can you attach the .config from your kernel directory that you are using?

    Regards
    Mugunthan V N

  • Hi, Mugunthan

    Unfortunately, I couldn't upload file in my e2e account's file directory not via Opera, not via IE. Could you provide an e-mail?

    Regards

    Anton

  • Hi, Pavel

     I explored sources a bit.. According to file arch/arm/mach-omap2/device.c: missing  davinci_mdio module's messages in linux kernel log likely means that  CONFIG_ARCH_TI816X macro is not defined, am I wrong?

    Regards,

    Anton

  • Anton,

    Yes, I think CONFIG_ARCH_TI816x macro should be defined.

    Can you check your {EZSDK}/board-support/linux-2.6.37-psp04.04.00.01/.config file, it should have:

    #
    # TI OMAP2/3/4 Specific Features
    #
    CONFIG_ARCH_OMAP2PLUS_TYPICAL=y
    # CONFIG_ARCH_OMAP2 is not set
    # CONFIG_ARCH_OMAP3 is not set
    # CONFIG_ARCH_OMAP4 is not set
    CONFIG_ARCH_TI81XX=y
    CONFIG_ARCH_TI816X=y
    # CONFIG_ARCH_TI814X is not set

    #

    #

    CONFIG_TI_DAVINCI_EMAC=y
    CONFIG_TI_DAVINCI_MDIO=y
    CONFIG_TI_DAVINCI_CPDMA=y

  • Pavel,

    I checked configuration, I have the same as in your post.

    Regards,

    Anton

  • Anton,

    Can you check if the  __devinit davinci_mdio_probe(struct platform_device *pdev) is called. This function is in the same linux-2.6.37-psp04.04.00.01/drivers/net/davinci_mdio.c file. This davinci_mdio_probe() is calling the davinci_mdio_reset() functions at this line:

    data->bus->reset    = davinci_mdio_reset,

    Can you check if the platform_device_register(&ti816x_mdio_device); and clk_add_alias(NULL, dev_name(&ti816x_mdio_device.dev), NULL, &ti816x_emac1_device.dev); functions are called. These are located in linux-2.6.37-psp04.04.00.01/arch/arm/mach-omap2/devices.c

    Regards,

    Pavel

  • Pavel,

    I've checked the things you specified. Here is the results:

    davinci_mdio_probe() isn't called

     both other functions is called

    Regards,

    Anton

  • Anton

    It looks like you config is fine, but can you check whether Davinci MDIO and EMAC platform_device_register is successful or not in the following file.
    arch/arm/mach-omap2/devices.c

    Also have some logs in MDIO and EMAC driver probe.

    Regards
    Mugunthan V N

  • Hi, Pavel

    I've checked config with excluded micrel support, but the kernel behavior is still the same.

    davinci_mdio_probe() still doesn't called.

    Best regards,

    Anton

  • Hi Mugunthan,

    I checked functions you specified, both platform_device_register() MDIO and EMAC returns 0.

    And both MDIO and EMAC driver probe functions weren't called.

    Following probe functions was checked:

    static int __devinit davinci_emac_probe(struct platform_device *pdev) from drivers/net/davinci_emac.c

    static int __devinit davinci_mdio_probe(struct platform_device *pdev) from drivers/net/davinci_mdio.c

    Regards,

    Anton

  • Anton

    Can you also verify whether platform_driver_register() for MDIO and EMAC is successful in the driver file?
    Also verify the driver name registered in both the device and driver register apis?

    Regards
    Mugunthan V N

  • Mugunthan,

    Both platform_driver_register() for MDIO and EMAC in driver files (drivers/net/davinci_mdio.c  and  drivers/net/davinci_emac.c) aren't called. That means that davinci_mdio_init() and davinci_emac_init() functions aren't called also.

    Also name field specified in device structure(from arch/arm/mach-omap2/devices.c) and driver structure(drivers/net/davinci_mdio.c  and  drivers/net/davinci_emac.c) contains the same names for mdio and emac.

    Regards,

    Anton

  • Anton

    This indicates that Davinci MDIO and EMAC drivers are not registered with the kernel, this needs to be sorted out first.

    Can you the following command after the kernel boot and paste the output here for further analysis.
    # zcat /proc/config.gz

    Mugunthan V N

    Regards,

    Anton

  • Hi,

    Have you got any additional ideas about PHY driver?

    Best,

    regards

  • Hi,

    As was investigated earlier on my board mdio bus determine PHY at number 0:07, no at 0:01 as on EVM. I've changed linux kernel sources in file in the following way:

    static struct emac_platform_data ti816x_emac1_pdata = {

       .rmii_en    =     0,

       //.phy_id         =     "0:01",

       .phy_id           =     "0:07",

       .gigabit_en =     1,

    };

    And received following log. Unfortunately the led on PHY still not lightened and ping command wasn't successful.

    Also there are second log with warning, backtrace and some statistics occuring peridiocally during device works.

    BUG: Your driver calls ioremap() on system memory. This leads

  • Hi Anton,

    Can you connect an Ethernet switch between the DM816x EMAC0 module and a PC LAN card. Then you can try with the u-boot commands:

  • Below we have some info regarding the ioremap() warning.

    http://e2e.ti.com/support/embedded/linux/f/354/t/166163.aspx

    Best Regards,

    Pavel

  • Hi, Pavel

    I've tried what you adviced, and I dont see in Wireshark(sniffer) any net packets from device on my PC LAN interface. Also I m still in incomprehension why led on PHY doesn't works properly. While they works fine without processor's signals.

    I also have additional question about second emac controller.

    ti816x_ethernet_init() function from arch\arm\mach-omap2\devices.c file contains line:

    clk_add_alias(NULL, dev_name(&ti816x_mdio_device.dev), NULL, &ti816x_emac1_device.dev);

    but it doesn't contains same line for emac2, does it mean that PHY connected to emac2 wouldn't work properly?

    Here is the log.

  • Hi,

    We finally managed to run Ethernet on second PHY (MDIO adress 0:02 + EMAC1 interconnected)  . First PHY (MDIO adress 0:01 + EMAC0 interconnected) have problems on PHY pins TXCLK and RXCLK - when we plug-in processor clock generation on this pins fades(they clocked by PHY in 100 mbps mode). On second PHY there is no same problem. Also by checking PHY's registers we developed that on fault PHY in 16 register NAND Tree override pin is on instead of MII override pin, which stands on correct PHY. Could it be a reason of issue?

    Now we are going to run HDMI. As you remember, now we are using arago fs. I suggest it means, I should add several linux kernel modules for HDMI and video processing. Am I right?

    Best regards,

    Anton

  • Anton,

    We have one silicon bug described in the DM816x Silicon Errata, that is good to be known:

    Advisory 2.1.18 CPGMAC 1-Gbps Mode Does Not Work When EMAC_TXCLK is Not Running

    I do not understand what you mean here, can you provide more details?

    Check our HDMI driver User Guide:

    http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/TI81XX_PSP_HDMI_Driver_User_Guide

    You will find there, that you need to load vpss.ko and ti81xxfb.ko, before loading ti81xxhdmi.ko module.

    For future HDMI questions, please make a new post. Let us keep this thread related only to the EMAC PHY.

    Well, we running in 100 Mbps mode. But it is good to know for further.

    Sure, I will try. Our PHY, which is MicrelKSZ8051, has register "Operation Mode Strap Override". I suggest most of different PHYs have the same one, but I'm not sure. There are several different strap-in override modes which you can set using this register(depends on PHY type): MII override, RMII override, NAND Tree override etc. On our correct PHY MII override mode is selected while on fault PHY NAND Tree override mode is selected.

    I don't know who sets this bit associated with NAND tree mode, by default MII mode bit is set. And as a possible result we haven't clock generation on TXCLK and RXCLK pins. And as a possible of this clock issue the leds on fault PHY doesn't lightened properly.

    OK, it's a good idea.

  • The DM816x/AM389x device can read/write external PHY registers through the MDIO module. You can check whether the MDIO sets the NAND tree mode bit. The MDIO is described in DM816x/AM389x TRM, sections:

    6.2.7 MDIO Module

    6.2.7.2.2 Writing Data To a PHY Register

  • Hi

    Even me also facing a problem with ethernet... Ethernet is not working in my board.

    dm8168 is my board.

    i am getting a error like this while booting..

    Hardware is initialized using a generic method
    No state is present for card EVM
    Configuring network interfaces... phy_connect
    PHY 0:01 not found
    net eth0: could not connect to phy 0:01
    ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready

    please let me know what i can do to clear that..

    Regard
