Best Bang For The Buck Emulator

Hello All,

What is the best 'bang for the buck' (USB) emulator out there for DSP's?

TIA,

  • I think the most common one I see is the Spectrum Digital XDS510USB, it is well supported and does a fine job at a reasonable price. The SD XDS510USB used to be my standard though these days I use a BlackHawk USB560m model, since it is XDS560 class it is much faster loading and debugging, though that also means it costs significantly more. I would suggest either the SD or BH emulators, they both seem to keep up fairly well with the drivers and have worked well for me (and others on my team).

Unfortunately I am not as familiar with the Signum emulator, hopefully some others in the community can comment on them, looking at the site it seems to have wider support for ARM devices which could be an advantage if you want to use it for an ARM processor, however I do not know how strong their CCS driver support will be (does not mean it is bad, I just have not heard anything either way).

EDIT: Just an additional comment, there are cheaper alternatives out there but I would beware and consider the old saying 'you get what you pay for', as some of the cheapest emulators will either be extremely slow or have limited or potentially unstable driver support. The only emulators I would generally suggest from personal use and minimal issues are the SD and BH models.

  • Just my $.02:

I bought a Blackhawk USB510L Emulator for my personal use, and use it heavily for my company's development of the DM647 DSP.  I've been pleased with it as it has performed on par with the Spectrum Digital XDS510USB emulators I've used in the past, especially with the latest Blackhawk USB510L Drivers.

  • Bernie and JRasmussen,

Thanks for your replies.  I've definitely read some interesting stories on the 'net regarding that knock-off company from you-know-where.

BH or SD it is then!

    Thanks!
