SN75115: Choice Between SN75115, SN75ALS193 or SN65LBC173A

Part Number: SN75115
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN75ALS193, SN65LBC173A,

If you had a choice between SN75115, SN75ALS193 or SN65LBC173A, which would you choose and why? (Assuming cost was not a factor)

Consider the application where the input differential signal is ΔV = 0V = LOW, and ΔV = 5V = HIGH.

The receiver's output goes into TTL-type logic device.

  • Hi Darren,

The SN75115 is different from the other two because it is a Dual Differential line receiver. The other two devices are Quadruple Differential line receivers. That right there would be a reason why you would chose one device over the other.

For your application, the Common-Mode Input Voltage Range of all the devices meet the voltage requirements. When it comes to TTL compatibility, you should look at the VOH and VOL of each of the differential line receivers and make sure it is compatible with the VIL and VIH of the external device.

The SN75115 comes with more features than the other Quadruple Differential line receivers since it has more free pins. It has the choice of open-collector or active pull-up outputs. It has an optional built-in 130 Ohm terminating resistor. It has frequency response control and channel strobes.

The SN75ALS193 is a very simple Quadruple Differential line receiver.

The SN65LBC173A is actually designed for RS-485 and RS-422. It has a signaling rate greater than 50 Mbps.

When it comes to choosing between these devices it just depends what features you want and the requirements of your system. They all have different Common-Mode Input Voltage Ranges and their electrical characteristics may differ.
