TCAN1051HV-Q1: Bus-Pin Fault Protection - Testing

Hi Sir/Madam,

We are currently using TCAN1051HVDRQ1 in our design. We would like to test the Bus Fault protection up to 60V of the part. What is the timing of the 60V voltage level we can provide to IC without damaging the component. Is there any other protection we need to follow to avoid damage to the board? What is the current limit we need to set for 60V power supply?

If any test setup is available please share it so the same can be followed to protect the IC or board from damage.

    Echoing a similar thread here, no special timing parameters or current limits need to be considered when testing a fault condition that is below a device's absolute maximum rating. Please see the linked post for more info and comments.

    Thank you for your support.

    We are planning to test both the CANL and CANH signal lines with +/-60V voltage levels with respect to GND for 10ms. Hope it will not cause any damage to the device.

    During the fault condition will the CAN Transceiver couple the 60V to either the VCC/GND which may affect other device on our PCB. Please confirm.

    Also if you can share any App note or Test setup images we can refer it will be helpful.

  • Hi Amarnath, 

    This device should be able to withstand a ±60V bus fault without damage for much longer than 10ms. This will not significantly impact the state of the Vcc/GND lines as minimal current will flow into the bus pins during this fault condition. Even if the device is attempting to drive the bus, the fault current will be internally limited. 

    Here is similar information for CAN ESD testing as I shared for RS-485 in the previously linked post. These setups will be almost identical for testing the different transceivers.
