TVS3301: parallel usage

Part Number: TVS3301

Hello support team,

My customer inquires TVS3301 parallel usage. Could you support?

*TVS3301 has 1kV/1100W capability for 61000-4-5. If they put two parallel TVS3301, can these two consider to support 2200W?

*They assume that TVS3301 also have clamp voltage variation. How the clamped current flows in the two TVS3301? divided by half or imbalance?

*Do you have any recommendation for this usage?

Thanks,

Koji Ikeda

  • Hello Koji,

While we don't have any official TI data on this, we have seen a few use cases like this in the past where multiple TVS diodes were connected in parallel to share current and increase the overall system power rating. However, in order to achieve this, the engineer had to add a series resistor to each diode to make sure each path had equal impedance paths to ground. This is because not all TVSs will have the same breakdown voltage, and normally whatever TVS has the lowest breakdown voltage will sink most of the current. The resistors will basically slow the flow of current to give all the other TVSs a chance to breakdown and start conducting.

The value of the resistors will depend on the surge current expected and the length of the pulse. Sometimes, the trace resistance on the PCB is enough. Theoretically, since there is about a 3 V variation in Vbr in the datasheet, a resistance of 0.11 Ohms would create 3 V at 27 A (8/20 us IEC 61000-4-5 pulse rating) and 1 Ohm for 3 A (10/1000 us pulse rating).

Please let me know if you have any other questions on this.

    Regards,

    Matt Smith
