SN65HVD233: Connexion CAN tranceiver to RS485 tranciever

Part Number: SN65HVD233

Hello,

In one of the configurations of our customer's tool, our CAN tranciever circuit above could be connected to RS485 tranciever.

We don't expect to work correctly in this configuration but we would like to know if it could stress or damage our chip or the RS485 tranciever?

Regards,

  • Both RS-485 and CAN use differential signals, and termination resistors of similar values. The CAN recessive state is 0 V, but the fail-safe resistors on the RS-485 bus will generate a valid idle voltage. So if both use the same protocol (which is unlikely), they might actually be able to communicate. In any case, there will be no damage.

  • Thanks for the help Clemens!

    Eric,

Clemens is right here, damage is not expected, communication might work but not guaranteed nor reliable.

    Regards,

    Eric Hackett
