Hi!

We are trying to use DP83869HM

RGMII connected to switch SJA1105 NXP We are using media converters to connect to computer #1. Connection from computer #1 to switch already checked and it is perfect for 100MB and 1GB

Connector J18 connected to computer #2 using UTP cable and RJ45

Please check iPerf logs for 100MB and for 1GB

As you can see we have a lot of issues

Please advise what test can be done to find the problem. We have MDIO access to registers as well

    Can you confirm that 100 mbps throughput is as desired but 1 gb is not working.

    How are you configuring the PHY to link up for both 100/1000 speeds?

    Can you give us a register dump from 0x0000-0x001E for cases in which there is a problem.

    Checked Reg 0x0009, 0x000A, 0x0011; to check if there are any MDI Link/Auto Negotiation issues. They all look good. 

    So the issue isn't with Link or AutoNeg.

    Can you also deliver register 6E and 6F? This will tell us what MAC Interface the PHY is strapped into.

    Could you clarify what this statement means?

    • 6E reading as 0xC0(0X0C is address)

    it's looking like the problem may be the MAC interface, and it can be timing related.

    See if the RX lines are toggling when data is being transmitted on the line

    Check RX_CLK & TX_CLK Freq to be 125 MHz.

    What is the offset between the data line and Clock line (length off of traces on the board)

    Offset of trace length on the board may be impacting the effective timing between data and clock. If so, different RGMII Timing Delays for possible improvement (Register Address 0x86).

  • Here is RGMII traces length and delays on PCB:

    We tried all variations on delays in 86h register but no improvements

    What we found is that RX data(DP83869 to switch) eye diagram is really bad looking

    And TX data is ok. 
    Switch delays are off. We do not know what can cause such a dirty eye diagram

    There are a couple Loopback tests we can try to isolate where the problem is:

    • MAC side Loopback - Will tell us if it is a MAC issue
    • Reverse Loopback   - Will tell us if there is an MDI data line issue

    Please send instruction how to set up these loops and what utility to use. Problem for loops that utilities I know - wont accept any messages back as IP is different

    Can you send a snapshot of VDDIO? It looks like a large amplitude of noise is on VDDIO; can you reduce activity on the board to reduce VDDIO ripple and see if the RX_D0 eye diagram improves?

    Can you also remove FB13 and replace it with a 0hm resistor to see if it improves the VDDIO ripple and RX_D0 waveform?

    Nope it is without replacing resistor. 
    When I had high ripple I was measuring with common probe. When I measured it with proper spring probe it didnt have a ripple

    Yes I did check it and was able to set a MII Loopback
    Problem is that I cannot properly send anything from PC and receive it to this PC back. So I can send it without receiving it and check RXData. Problem is with anything I use(iperf, ping) speed of sending is not good. We need to send something really big usually to see bad eye diagram. 
    Are there any windows or Linux utility I can use to check MII Loopback?

  • Also, we found that register 0x15 Rx Error is going up slowly

    and register 0x0A with idle rx error is going to 0xFF and then reset to zero

      • If no response perhaps MAC side issue.
      • I am not aware of any software (Windows or Linux) utility for sending larger packets for Loopback
    2. In earlier Reg dump there were no no errors on 0xA and 0x15, has anything changed? Please confirm that this is not because of a setup change.
    3. Where was VDDIO measured from? Was it from top or bottom of ferrite. Was it measured across the Decoupling Capacitors?
    4. Symptoms look like there is an issue between PHY and MAC interface and you are getting unwanted data toggling, based off EYE diag. Possible root cause can be noise at the PHY boundary. The noise can be in the power supply or in the ref clock.
      1. For power supply noise, the measurement must be across the decoupling capacitors.
      2. To check for the noise coming from the crystal/ref clock, measure eye diagram of CLK_OUT. It should be a clean 25 MHz clock.

    I dont know how to check it. Usually I check with iperf utility. However iperf is checking exact ip adress. If loop is engaged then packets will comeback but PC(which is sending data) is ignoring packets(different IP)

    Reg dump was done at the start. Registers 0xA and 0x15 changing when data is transferring. No setup changes

    I will check it tomorrow. We already tried to change oscillator taken from evaluation board(DP83869EVM).

    Please check with other engineers how we can test the loop(MII LOOP)?

    Thank you, I will wait for the result from CLK_OUT. Could you also measure the noise coming from RBIAS?

    MII Loopback issue hints that there is a MAC to PHY issue. If you cannot receive packets sent by the MAC, MII loopback will not be helpful. Please Check Section 9.3.4.1.1 In datasheet for how to enable MII Loopback.

    Some things to try/check before attempting MII Loopback:

    • Confirm device is in the correction Operation Mode. Can be configured with the OPMODE Registers (bit 11-9 of Register 0x4F, see section 9.4.8)
    • Confirm Auto-Negotiation is complete. Can be done by checking Reg 0x0009, 0x000A, 0x0011; to check if there are any MDI Link/Auto Negotiation issues.

    DP83869 is connected Switch SJA1105P. DP83869 VDDIO is 3.3V and SJA1105 was 3.3V as well. Once we decreased VDDIO of SJA1105 to 2.5V we have different results:
    1) Switch -> DP83869->MDI is perfect now with 1GB speed with zero retries
    2) Switch<- DP83869<- MDI have a good speed(almost 1GB) but hundreds retries.

    I was checking registers during communication:
    0x0009->0x0300
    0x000A->0x7800
    0x0011->0xAC02(But once it read BC02, which is weird)

    So, we still have issues on RXD side of RGMII  but not on TXD. We dont see difference between traces  which can cause it.

    We tried to power VDDIO of DP83869 with  2.5V as well but results were the same as above.


    Any ideas?
    Why it start to work at all with decreasing 3.3V to 2.5V levels

    1) SJA1105P switch power decreased to 2.5V;
    2) SJA1105P switch and DP83869 power decreased to 2.5V;

    Results were the same:
     Switch -> DP83869->MDI is perfect now with 1GB speed with zero retries;
     Switch<- DP83869<- MDI have a good speed(almost 1GB) but hundreds retries.

    It seems like lowering the voltage on the Switch is what improved your system.

    Root cause seems to be internal to the switch, I would recommend reaching out to vendor.

    You're also saying from Switch to MDI the communication is perfect, but on the way back it takes a hundred retries? How is it failing initially and when does it start to function?
