TCAN1044AV-Q1: Protection required

Part Number: TCAN1044AV-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ESD2CAN24-Q1

I am using the CAN transceiver -TCAN1044AV-Q1 in the design. The protection circuit is as shown below. I want to know if this is sufficient protection for the CAN bus? I have used MPN: 744232090 (0.11uH) as a CM choke, please let me know if this is ok, if not what is the selection criterion for this? I have also referred to SLLA271, but dint help me much.

  • Shashank,

This looks okay for the CMC. The protection you need can somewhat be system-dependent, but ultimately the only absolutely required components are the termination resistors on the two ends of the CAN bus, which are given as R7 and R22 in your schematic.

The discussion in SLLA271 is about transients caused by common-mode chokes. Ultimately, common-mode chokes are not required for a CAN bus node, though they can help with common-mode noise reduction for emissions considerations.

For the ESD protection, if you end up using it, I would recommend ESD2CAN24-Q1 for reference designator TVS2.

    Best,

    Danny
