Hi, TI expert

The customer company has a question about selecting a TVS device with a surge function.


Q1) Can I confirm what level the TPD1E10B06 corresponds to in the test level of IEC 61000-4-5?


Q2) The TPD1E10B06 Datasheet says 90W, 6A, but the Test Level is in kV units, so I don't understand. How many Watts should I use to satisfy each level?

    1. The IEC 61000-4-5 level would be under level 1 for this device.  

    We use a 40 Ohm coupling network for most of our surge testing. Using Ohms law, V=IR, we can get the voltage of the pulse. In this case 6 A * 42 Ohm = 252 V 

    2. The power rating is dependent on the coupling network used. When talking about surge the main specification will be the peak pulse current the device is capable of, not the power dissipated at the surge pulse generator output.

    The peak pulse power and peak pulse current ratings give you the clamping voltage. The power equation is P = IV, the voltage in this case is the clamping voltage of the diode. 90 W / 6A = 15 V

    Q1) In order to satisfy Class 4 in the table, should I select a product with IEC61000-4-5 (8/20 μs) specification of 100A or more?

    Q2) Is it possible to recommend a TVS diode that satisfies Class3 and Class4?

    Yes for an IEC 61000-4-5 the level would require at least a 96 A peak pulse current rating with a coupling network of 40 Ohms (data line surge). 

    Unfortunately at this time we don't have any class 3 or class 4 rated devices. Class 3 and class 4 surge ratings have very high energy and that level of protection is not needed in most applications. Our highest rated surge diodes will have a peak pulse current rating of 43 A with a 42 Ohm coupling network. 

    May I know what the application is here?

    The customer's application is as follows.

    - Application: Industrial Equipment(PDA)
    - Using TPS25947 (E-FUSE)
    - input : 12V

    Customer have additional inquiries.

    1. In the circuit diagram of TPS25947EVM, TVS Diode (SMBJ16CA_Littelfuse) is applied to Designator_D5.
    However, the package size (5.59 x 3.94 mm) of SMBJ16CA is larger than IC, making it difficult to apply.
    I want to apply it with a small package size suitable for TPS25947 (ex. 2.0mmx2.0mm). Is there a device you can recommend?

    2. And depending on the TVS diode, only one of the values of 10/1000μs or 8/20μs is indicated.

    Looking at SMBJ16CA, there is only information about 10/1000μs and no information about 8/20us, so I want to check the surge specifications of Class3 & Class4.

    I would like to know the part marked in yellow in the table below. If there is a conversion formula, please share it.

    1.  The TVS1801 will be a good fit here since the SMBJ16CA has a bi-directional polarity. It's offered in the DRV package (2.00mm x 2.00mm)  

    2. I'm not aware of any direct conversion formula for 8/20uS to 10/1000uS peak pulse ratings.  The 8/20 peak pulse power/current ratings will be much higher than the 10/1000 ratings.

    The 10/1000uS peak pulse power ratings are in the datasheet for all TVS devices in the absolute max ratings tables.

    The clamping voltages were not characterized using the 10/1000uS pulse so we don't have that data. I would suggest the TVS1801 over the TVS1800 or TVS2200 if they want a bi-directional device.
