TLK2711EVM-CVAL: Compatibility with Xilinx UltraScale transceivers

Part Number: TLK2711EVM-CVAL
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLK2711-SP

Hi,

I'm working in a project that requires use the TLK2711 (TX). The FPGA (RX) selected is the XCKU060 Kintex UltraScale and we are going to connect the TLK2711 with the GTH transceivers from Xilinx. After reading both datasheets, we have observed the following information:

1) We believe that both devices are not 100% compatible, have you tested the TLK2711 with Xilinx FPGAs?

2) If so, is it possible a direct connection or some adaptation is required?

Thanks!

Best regards!

  • Hi Rodrigo,

    1) When you say that you believe the devices are not 100% compatible, is this based solely on the VOD_max of the TLK2711-SP exceeding the VID_max of your FPGA?  If so, I think there are a couple considerations that could help address this.

    - It seems like there is a pretty healthy margin built in between the typical and max value, so it wouldn't surprise me to see most parts stay within 2000mVppd.  Of course, this is not a guarantee and any part with VOD between the min and max value would still meet our specification.

    - Is there much insertion loss between the TLK2711 and FPGA?  Insertion loss will attenuate the pre-emphasized part of the waveform, so it is possible that the FPGA would never see 2100mVppd on its receiver.

With this said, we have not tested TLK2711 with Xilinx FPGAs.

    2) Sometimes AC coupling is required if TLK2711 and FPGA common mode voltages do not match.  If VOD_max is still a concern, you could try adding a passive T network attenuator, but you will need to evaluate the high speed performance of this network.

    Thanks,

    Drew
