TCAN334G: The suggested/maximum length of cable for 5Mbps or higher bit rate(8Mbps)

Part Number: TCAN334G

Hi Ti experts,

My customer wants to use F280039C + TCAN334G to achieve 5Mbps CAN-FD function.

What is the suggested/maximum length of cable for 5Mbps or higher bit rate(8Mbps).

As shows in TCAN334G's datasheet, it is 40m cable length for 1Mbps. How about it for 5Mbps. Do you have some materials for introdution.

  • Hi Gary,

Maximum cable length for a CAN network is a relatively complex topic that does not have a simple answer. In short, the maximum achievable data rate on a network will depend on the network length and complexity, termination placement and method, cable quality and type, impedance mismatch and management, as well as the transceiver used. Many of these topics are addressed in the app note Controller Area Network Physical Layer Requirements, but it too only discusses guidelines up to 1Mbps. However, all of the following subsections in section 4.1 will address how to manage these variables to achieve the best results. '

Do you know what the target network topology for this design is? How many nodes are intended to be used and where are they to be connected to the cable harness?
