SN65HVD33-EP: Transient energy into the A/B inputs

Part Number: SN65HVD33-EP

To whom it may concern -

The absolute max rating for the bus terminal (A, B, Y, Z) cannot exceed -9 and 14V. Is this spec'd based off of DC or AC voltage?

Per Figure 26 from the data sheet, it looks like that there are internal bidirectional diodes rated up to 22V. Does that mean these diodes never turn on?

Thanks,

Brendan

  • Hi Brendan,

Our main RS485 expert is out until next week. I'll see if I can contact a design engineer to see they may be able to tell us more about this (they may get back to me next week as well...) but my guess is this could be a datasheet error where we copied pasted a diagram from one device to this one....

  • The −9 V … 14 V range is a DC rating.

The diodes appear to be for transient/ESD protection. (The V(TRANS) rating requires a 100 Ω resistor to limit the current through the diodes; ESD pulses are much shorter and do not have much energy.)
