TCAN334: Max Capacitance for ESD Protection

Part Number: TCAN334
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ESD2CAN24-Q1

Hello,

We’re investigating adding some additional protection on CANH and CANL to avoid damaging the TCAN334.  The TVS part we’re investigating for this purpose has a typical channel input capacitance of 45pF, so we’d be adding this much capacitance to each node on the bus between CANH to GND and CANL to GND.

We couldn’t find anything in the TCAN334 chip datasheet regarding maximum bus capacitance.  For reference there are four total nodes on the CAN bus and we use a 1Mbps baud rate.

Thanks very much, Keith

  • Keith,

This is an older device where we didn't characterize the bus capacitance, and finding data will be difficult. That being said, in my experience these older transceivers will have 30-40pF inherently from the transceiver. With the amount of nodes on the bus, and 1Mbps data rate, adding protection at each node along with the inherent bus capacitance transceiver won't cause enough delay to throw errors at the controller side.

I'd recommend the ESD2CAN24-Q1 device from TI's portfolio for added transient protection.

    Regards,

    Eric Hackett
