PCA9306: Can PCA9306 support 12.5M MDIO application?

My customer has a confusion that whether our PCA9306 can support 12.5M MDIO application?

Can you help me confirm this application?

    Hi Matt,

    PCA9306 is recommended only for I2C speeds from 100kHz and 400kHz. 

    I recommend using the TCA39306 device, as this device is characterized for higher data rates up to 12.5MHz I3C speeds. I believe MDIO would work for this device as well.

    Can you help explain that is there any risk to use PCA9306 under the 12.5M MDIO application?

    Because my customer has used PCA9306 on their board, they want to evaluate the risk, in relative detail.

    Hi Matt,

    The risk is that our team has not design or verified device functionality for the PCA9306 at 12.5MHz. This part was specifically designed for 100kHz and 400kHz applications. 

    The input signal vs. the output signal may not be as expected due the PCA9306 ability to level translate 12.5MHz signals. PCA9306, is not tested or characterized above 400kHz, so the effects are unknown.

    Hi Tyler,

    Because my customer sees the MDIO application scene in the datasheet.

    And in most MDIO applications, the signal frequency is about 2.5MHz.

    Thus, they want to know why we mark MDIO, and the highest frequency is 400kHz.

    Or can you help validate PCA9306 under 2.5MHz?

    Hi Matt,

    You are correct. MDIO signal frequency is roughly 2.5MHz. This looks more like a datasheet error that needs to be fixed. We have characterized this device to 400kHz and not to frequencies greater than that. 

    Please have the customer consider the TCA39306, which is our p2p compatible device to the PCA9306. Same device, but characterized for 12.5MHz, which would satisfy the needs of MDIO signaling.
