SN65HVD230: Please review the schematic

Part Number: SN65HVD230
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TCAN337, TCAN330

Dear TI experts,

My customer drew their schematic with SN65HVD230. Could you review the schematic?

And here are more questions ;

1. Is there any recommended schematic for OBD of car?

2. Are resistors and capacitors necessary for CANH and CANL line? (R11, R12, C10, C11)

3. I saw that SN65HVD230 is very old part. Could you recommend latest part instead of SN65HVD230? Pin to pin part is best for my customer.

Best regards,

Chase

  • Chase,

    Thanks for bringing this to E2E.

    1. Is there any recommended schematic for OBD of car?

    Most OBD schematics I've seen are typical CAN schematics, nothing special about them.

    2. Are resistors and capacitors necessary for CANH and CANL line? (R11, R12, C10, C11)

    Resistors are necessary if they aren't present on any other part of the bus. That is, CAN buses require termination resistance, and if there isn't termination anywhere else then this node will need them. Typically, with OBD they have half the termination internally, and then plugging into the port adds the other half of the termination. Does the customer know the status of the entire bus and its termination? For the capacitors, they aren't necessary but they help with filtering any high-frequency noise.

    3. I saw that SN65HVD230 is very old part. Could you recommend latest part instead of SN65HVD230? Pin to pin part is best for my customer.

    Is the customer using the low power mode and Vref? We have the TCAN33x family, but none have both the silent mode and the Vref output. The closest would be TCAN330 or TCAN337.

    Regards,
