Hi.. This is Nagamani Paluru, Hardware Engineer from ABB Global Industries India. As part of our new product design, there is a requirement of CAN FD Controller for communication purpose. We have seen TCAN4550 component which can meet our main requirements.

In specifications, it is mentioned that Supply voltage from -0.3V to 42 V as Absolute Maximum ratings and 5.5/6V to 24V as recommended operating conditions.

In our product, we have only 3.3V Supply Voltage.

Here our question is, what if we use TCAN4550 with 3.3V operating voltage. Is there will be any issues in performance or behavior wise. Is there will be any limitations to use for high speed data transmission and for long distance.

Could you help us to give clarity regarding this to understand much better about TCAN4550.

Hi Nagamani,

Unfortunately No, the TCAN4550-Q1 requires a minimum VSUP supply voltage of 5.5V to operate due to the internal 5V LDO needed for the CAN controller and transceiver. You would need to create an additional supply rail of at least 5.5V in order to use the TCAN4550-Q1. I have seen DCDC Boost Regulators used for this purpose in other applications.

CAN FD typically requires a 5V system, but some non-automotive applications do use 3.3V and there are dedicated 3.3V CAN FD transceivers for these applications. Unfortunately TI does not have a 3.3V CAN FD controller similar to the TCAN4550-Q1.
