SN75174: Unused Channels for SN75174 and SN75175

Hi Team,

I have some unused channels for the SN75174 Line Driver and SN75175 Line Receiver, and I wanted to confirm how to connect the pins of these unused channels.

The datasheet didn't provide any indication on how to handle unused channels, and on other Line Driver/Receivers I typically ground the input pins and leave the output floating. Can you confirm if this is the recommended approach?

Regards,

JP

  • Hi JP,

Your thought process is mostly correct - ground inputs and leave outputs floating is 100% okay for unused channels on the driver.  The differential receiver is a bit different as the non-inverting pin and inverting  pin of the differential receiver should be pulled to different levels - i.e. A to VCC and B to GND - since its measuring the voltage between A and B and 0V is undefined.

    Just as a quick overview:

    SN75174:

"A" pins - cannot leave floating - either tie to GND or device VCC.

Y/Z pins - can be left floating

EN - enable pins can't be left floating - if channel is unused tie to GND.

    SN75175:

"A" pins - cannot leave floating - tie to VCC

"B" pins - cannot leave floating - tie to GND

"Y" pins - can leave floating

EN pins - can't be left floating - if channel is unused tie to GND.

Please let me know if you have any other questions!

    Best,
