DP83822IF: USB-2-MDIO tool giving strange results

This does seem quite odd. If the logic analyzer is able to detect it well, it does appear that the launchpad does not like this configuration. When the launchpad is connected to these leads, is there anything else that is on the line like the SoC?

I had trouble with the analyzer connected.  Was getting "Timeout!" as a result to READs.

When I disconnected the analyzer, I started getting the results in the screenshot.

Yes, the FPGA is in the circuit.

I commented out the MDC and MDIO signals so they will be ignored by the FPGA.

Does this launchpad work on other TI PHY EVMs if you have available? I am wondering if the launchpad is damaged; thus having a known good EVM can be a good way to isolate for this behavior.

Unfortunately, I do not have a TI PHY EVM.  I can get one but it would take time.  I just recently received this launchpad new on Monday.  Maybe I should order both an EVM and another launchpad.  Is there anything else I can check to ensure this launch pad is operating correctly?

From PHY team perspective, as we use the launchpad for this sole limited functionality, there isnt much we can do else to ensure correct operation except try out on common platform. However, I am curious about what firmware is this launchpad using. Can you please share the firmware file and procedure you used to flash this launchpad for USB2MDIO operation?

I have the MSP430F5 series.  I followed the instructions for the USB-2-MDIO tool (SNLU197) in section 2.3.1 step 6 which uses the MSP430flasher along with the F5 batch file that flashes the program.  I setup the hardware as in Figure 4 except I connected my leads from the PHY MDIO and MDC.  GND connected to common ground on my board.

I see. Can you please try flashing using the attached file instead along with Uniflash (available via TI.com). With this firmware, 4.1 will be MDC and 4.2 will be MDIO. In addition, it is recommended to powerup launchpad only when connected to an already powered PHY.

I need to re-solder AND secure one of my leads.  And I just completed the flashing.  Oh well.  A job for tomorrow morning.  Used the online version of UNIFLASH - slick little tool.  I noticed a difference in LED behavior this time.  I've got one red and one green at opposite ends of the board.

I'm still unable to use this MDIO tool. 

I downloaded uniflash and flashed the launchpad with the program you sent me.  I connected 4.1 to MDC and 4.2 to MDIO.  And I started the launchpad after I had already powered PHY.

Questions:

The launchpad I/O locations for MDC and MDIO are opposite from the MDIO tool instructions.  Is that correct?

I noticed there are 2 COM ports instanced with the launchpad.  I assumed COM5 is the right interface?

Maybe I'm still missing something?  No matter what I do the tool reports this...

Usually, the COM port to use for USB2MDIO is USB Serial Device. Can you try COM9?

And yes, MDC/MDIO cross wiring with regards to instructions is intentional. USB2MDIO is an older software developed from a while back; we have recently released a new software; DIEP, but for all intents and purposes, we can continue using USB2MDIO.

I tried COM9 with no success.  Went back to the original program and came back to this version trying all the ports that showed up.

Maybe I should try DIEP?  I had not seen that.

We can keep on USB2MDIO for now. When you say you went back to the original program, can you please expand upon that? The team is more familiar with v3.04 with USB2MDIO.

Let me summarize the setup process for utilizing this:

- VDDIO of PHY needs to be 3.3V

- V3.04 flashed via uniflash

- MDC = 4.1, MDIO = 4.2, GNDs also connected

- Launchpad is powered on once PHY is already alive

I mean that I flashed back to the original USB2MDIO tool that I downloaded to see if I got my wires crossed.  But I'm ok using whatever version of this tool we need to get running.  I checked all of these items and I'm now setup as indicated.  Then I plugged in the USB and none of my related COM ports were there.  It will take me a while to figure this out.  Maybe I need to reinstall the MSP430 drivers.  I have some other balls in the air I need to attend to.  I should get to this sometime tomorrow.

I'm back.  Good news is I now have the EVM.  Bad news is the MDIO sniffer tool still gives me 
"Error! Device not connected!"

This seems to indicate the launchpad has a problem?

Did you make sure to connect the LP with the EVM when not powered (4.1 = MDC, 4.2 = MDIO, GND = GND), then power up the EVM first and then the launchpad? This is also with FW version 3.04.

At this point, the current theory is perhaps a damaged launchpad. I was able to conduct this configuration/measurement very recently on the EVMs last week. Is there another MSP430F5529 launchpad that you have available to confirm this?
