[FAQ] TUSB216I: How do you create a system with a 10 meter passive cable using a USB2 redriver?

Part Number: TUSB216I
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TUSB217A, TUSB216-Q1, , TUSB216, TUSB211A

I want to create a system that can support USB2 while utilizing a 10 meter passive cable. Which redriver(s) should I use, and how should they be configured?

  • For selecting a redriver for a 10 meter distance, we recommend the TUSB216, TUSB216I, TUSB216-Q1, TUSB217A, or the TUSB211A.

For placing our redrivers for a 10 meter distance, we recommend placing a redriver at each side of the system, one at the connector of the host, and another at the connector of the device, as shown in the diagram below.

For configuring the redrivers, we recommend starting with the EQ pin set to at least Boost level 2, as this should provide a moderate amount of boost to the signal, and setting the RX_SEN pin at Medium. These settings are a good starting point, and if needed, can be increased up to Boost level 3 and RX_SEN level high to further boost the performance. The needed settings may be dependent on factors such as signal driving strength, and specific cable quality. The eye diagram below is an example of the above setup with the TUSB216I and the highest boost settings.
