DP83867CR: DP83867 to switch

Part Number: DP83867CR

Hello,

I am designing a new carrier board for the Conga-SA7 this has a DP83867 on it and uses the SMARC interface to connect to the carrier board. On the carrier board we want to use an Ethernet switch ic with external PHYs to allow multiple Ethernet ports. Via the SMARC interface i only have access to the MDI of the DP83867.

I am really new to this, I already found in the FAQ that capacitive decoupling is not supported on the DP83867.https://e2e.ti.com/support/interface-group/interface/f/interface-forum/1265741/faq-ti-ethernet-phy-capacitive-coupling-transformerless-operation?tisearch=e2e-sitesearch&keymatch=capacitive%20coupling

My question is it even possible to connect the MDI that is available on the SMARC interface directly to the MDI of the external phy that is on the carrier board?

  • Hi Marf,

Thank you for providing the full context of this issue and for doing your own research to find out the DP83867 does NOT support capacitive coupling, this has been very helpful for me.

As I understand it, the SMARC interface connects directly to the MDI side of the DP83867. This connection can still be made with the use of a transformer.

    Regards,

    Alvaro
