TUSB8044AEVM: TUSB8044A

Part Number: TUSB8044AEVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TUSB8044A,

Hello,

My name is Pavel Skoda - I am going to design the USB-C HUB with TUSB8044A (I need 2x USB 2.0 outputs and 1x HDMI output) - I am planning to use the Eval board for preliminary test.

According to data sheet the TUSB8044A is USB 3.2 Gen but:

1. Why the TUSB8044AEVM is USB 3.0 (per Digikey description)? Can I change it to 3.1 (or 3.2)?

2. I would like to use on one of the downstream output the HDMI (V 1.4) connector for LCD 1280x800 resolution. Is the GPU required for that output or the TUSB8844A is capable to deliver video data?

3.  Is there any other suggestion for that kind of design?

Thank you for your help.

Pavel

  • Hi Pavel:

TUSB8044A can only support USB 2/3 data, it can not support HDMI signal. For your other questions:

    Q1:TUSB8044A is USB 3.1 Gen 1 device.

Q2: Type-C Alt mode can support Display port signal, so a GPU is required for DP output  and you need MST hub for hdmi.

Q3: here is example for type-C port with hub and alt mode:

  • Hello Brian,

Thank you so much for the answers and explanation!

    My design requirements are:

    1. USB-C upstream input [will be connected to PC]

    2. 1x HDMI (V1.4) output [only one LCD will be connected there] and 2x USB-C outputs [but these will be used only as USB 2.0]

    3. It is preferable not to use external power but the power from upstream USB-C instead (like most of the USB-C HUBs on the market).

    4. Could you please recommend the TI specific ICs for the above requirements [with reference design if possible]?

(I know there are plenty available HUBs on the market with these requirements, but they are having lower operating temperature than we need).

Note: The Image that you sent is blurry - could you try to re-send it please?

    Thank you so much.

    Pavel

  • Hi Pavel:

TI Hub can transfer USB signal. How do you input HDMI signal? from HDMI connector or type-C? normally type-C connector  can only receive DisplayPort signal

  • Hi Brian,

    Thank you for reply!

Here is the top-level Block diagram for explanation.

I am trying to design (besides the USB-C HUB from 1 to 4 outputs) also HDMI output for LCD (everything on the same PCB). The all signals are coming from Host (PC or laptop on the left) through USB-C. I need to provide HDMI output for single LCD with 1280x800 resolution.

The connection between HOST and my board will be the "USB-C to USB-C" with Thunderbolt cable.

Please, let me know you suggestion/recommendation for this design.

    Thank you so much.

  • Hi Pavel:

Issue here is type-C host can only send  out displayport signal , not HDMI . We can have a call to discuss this.
