AM26LV31E: RS422 Evaluation Board (7 Tx, 1 Rx)

Part Number: AM26LV31E
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: THVD1420

Tool/software:

I have a breadboard application where I need to drive 7 RS422 output, and receive 1 RS422 input. These will interface with an FPGA, so I'd like to use 3.3V logic. The interface speed must be >= 3 Mbps.

Can you please suggest an eval board(s)/kit(s) to accomplish this?

Thanks in advance!

  • Hi JT,

So we don't have any specific boards for our quad RS-422 devices.

For the 7 RS-422 outputs the AM26LV31E (2x of them) would be good for the outputs - we don't have a specific board to test this. In the past when we test these or other quad RS-422 devices we just use SMD to DIP adapters (something like this for the 16-TSSOP package for example: https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/aries-electronics/LCQT-TSSOP16/4754593) and a breadboard - but that is not an ideal setup in most cases, but it is what we generally use on our end. For the one unused output it can be left floating but the unused input should be grounded or tied to device VCC.

For the 1X receive input I'd just use something like the THVD1420 in the SOIC package as the generic RS-485 Half Duplex EVM - https://www.ti.com/tool/RS485-HF-DPLX-EVM - can work. This is specifically an RS-485 part but it is electrically compatible with RS-422 (RS-485 is better electrically than RS-422 and unless you need multi-channels (which is where our quad devices come in) we generally are going to suggest an RS-485 device). It isn't too fancy  of a device and you can set it up to be in a receive only mode for the reception circuit. It can support up to 12Mbps and work at 3.3V supplies so this device should be okay for the reception circuit.

Please let me know if you have any other questions and I will see what I can do!

    Best,

    Parker Dodson
