TVS2700: Replacement for P6SMB30A for overvoltage protection on 42V motor driver

Hello, the CrossRef tool suggests TVS2700 as the best replacement for P6SMB30A. We are looking for a Zener diode to put on the VM motor voltage line to protect our device during overvoltage events. Is TVS2700 the best choice for this? Our device is rated 42V abs max, 40V recommended max. Our datasheet currently recommends using P6SMB30A but we want to change it to recommend a TI component instead.

Hi Jacob,

If you are looking for a Zener diode, neither TVS2700 nor P6SMB30A are Zener diodes.

In terms of TVS2700 being a replacement for P6SMB30A, this will mostly depend on the need for surge rating, as the SMB device will have a much higher surge rating (14.7A 10/1000 vs 40A 8/20). TVS2700 has a max clamping of 35V, so as long as the operating voltage of the line is well below this, there will be no issues in using TVS2700.

Ahh you're right, I'll update my systems team to remove the "Zener diode" description in our upcoming datasheet.

Do you guys have a device rated closer to 42V clamping voltage we could use instead? Maybe 40V?

Sounds like a plan

In terms of another device, TVS3300 might be suitable depending on the operating voltage of the line, can you confirm what the voltage is? The max clamping voltage for this device is 40V, which will be much closer to the target clamping compared to TVS2700.

Just to confirm... is the need here for a Zener or TVS? It sounds like a TVS diode but I would just like to confirm this.
