TPS5420: Issue: TPS5420DR

Part Number: TPS5420

We purchased two versions of this part, MSL1 and MSL2.The datasheet is MSL 2, but we have not found documents explaining why is MSL1 . We sent the them to GETS for testing, where some issues were discovered,I really need u help!

1.the Xray and die marking are different, the changes are normal?

  • During electrical testing, the MSL2 all performed normally, but those MSL 1 showed a short circuit. We sent the lab datasheet April 2026, but they still shorted at 12V. Could this be due to an incorrect setup, or is there a problem with the parts itself? Thx so much !

  • pls check the document includes images6874.技术支持.docx

  • Hi Mike,

Has this been tested on the bench? If not, please bench the units to note the differences.

I will check with the team internally regarding what information is available between MSL1 and MSL2.

    Thank you,

    Joshua Austria

  • Hi Joshua,

we are not allowed to test on the bench until the problem has been identified.
thx, i will wait ur news about the MSL1 and MSL2.

    Mike

  • Hi Mike,

It was noted that after supply voltage was applied, VIN to GND began seeing a short. Can you please clarify how the voltage is being applied to the part before closed loop testing? What circuit is being used to identify shorts?

    Thank you,

    Joshua Austria

  • Hi Joshua,

    nice day
i am contacting gets, these are the all pictures I have right now.hope they will have help
    pls check the attach
the Xray and die marking is normal?TPS5420DR.docx

  • Hi Mike,

I had a chance to talk with the team internally. The MSL ratings should not affect the device in the manner being shown.

The team wants to see what circuit this device is being tested with that is causing a VIN to GND short. Can you please provide the schematic/application conditions?

    Thank you,

    Joshua Austria

  • Hi Joshua,

could u tell me the die marking is right? as the first attach shows, the MSL1 is LMR and MSL2 is TPS, LMR is right?
and the x-ray also not same as MSL 2, it's right?
We need to resolve these two issues urgent.

Let's not get hung up on the electrical testing for now; gets isn't being very cooperative—he only told me:
At first, we use curve trace to check between VIN and GND. It seems ok. After we apply 12V typical voltage and limit 0.1A between VIN and GND pin, it shows VIN pin heavily draws the current. Then we use curve trace recheck VIN and GND pins. It shows shorted.
the attach is their report, hope this helpsTest Report For PO 11052 Part Number TPS5420DR.pdf

  • Hi Mike,

The changes should be normal. The product addendum section of the datasheet shows both those top markings as valid.

As for their testing, if they are applying 12VIN to the device in open loop without any input cap or a valid circuit, then the application is invalid. It is likely, that this process is damaging the device entirely. This part is not designed to operate in this state.

Please have them test fresh units on the EVM or a datasheet equivalent application.

    Thank you,

    Joshua Austria

  • Hi Joshua,

    Thank you for your reply.

Regarding the marking: I specifically asked about the "die marking" (the marking on the bare die itself under the package), not just the top surface marking. I understand the datasheet shows both "LMR" and "TPS" as valid top markings, but could you please confirm if the die marking differences between MSL1 (LMR) and MSL2 (TPS) are also normal? The X-ray images also look different, and we need to ensure the internal die marking is correct.

Regarding the testing: We understand your point,however, gets used the exact same curve trace method on both MSL1 (LMR) and MSL2 (TPS). The MSL2 (TPS) units passed without damage, while the MSL1 (LMR) showed VIN-GND shorting (heavy current draw).Could you confirm if there is any known difference between the LMR (MSL1) and TPS (MSL2)?

We still need to resolve both the die marking and X-ray concern.    260928.docx

  • Hi Mike,

I do not believe we can share any information about the internal die markings for our parts on the public forum. If you have a TI representative, please have them reach out to us as it would be best to handle this through internal channels.

There is a difference between the two devices that should have been mentioned in a PCN. However, if there is no circuit to share, I am not sure what we can do to help. This part is not designed to be powered in open loop and we cannot validate any setups without the schematic. It would be best to get these parts on an EVM or a working schematic to see if fresh units of the MSL1 and MSL2 are working properly.

    Thank you,

    Joshua Austria
