TCA6416A: TCA6416A vs PCAL6416A

Part Number: TCA6416A

Hello. I have a question related to TCA6416A. This part has almost the same name as PCAL6416A and the pinout is the same at least for BGA package. Are these parts the same thing? PCAL6416A is not a Texas Instruments part but seems like the IC shares its design with TCA6416A. I need to know if the IC is the same.

Thank you in advance.

  • Hi Jose,

You are right that the two devices are equivalent in their pinout and functionality, but the actual design implementation between the two is different. TCA6416A was developed by Texas Instruments independently from the competitor device, and the similar part naming exists just to make the functional similarities obvious to customers.

Please let me know if you have any other questions on the device.

    Regards,
    Max
  • Hello Jose,

You are correct, these parts are nearly identical in every way. One small difference I found was in the "Reset Timing Requirements", our TI part is slightly quicker in reset pulse width and reset recovery time. You can see it on page pg 8 of TCA6416A and pg 37 of PCAL6416A

  • Adding on to Matt's comments, there is quite a bit of extra programmability in the PCAL device that I should point out as well, despite both devices having the same overall "IO expander" functionality. Things like the output drive strength, the pull-up/pull-down configurations on the IOs, the interrupts, etc. can be adjusted via the device's register map.
