TUSB8044: TUSB8044 device compatibility similar to TUSB8040?

Part Number: TUSB8044
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TUSB8040

Are the TUSB8044 and TUSB8040 sufficiently similar to assume that a USB 3 device deemed "extremely reliable" with the TUSB8040 is also similarly reliable with the TUSB8044?

Reason for this question is we need to develop a USB 3 hub board that communicates with a FLIR USB 3.1 Gen 1 camera. FLIR's recommended hub is based on the TUSB8040, which TI lists as not recommended for new designs. Apparently FLIR recommends the TUSB8040 due to extensive testing they've performed with their cameras and a TUSB8040 based hub.

Naturally we would like to develop with the TUSB8044 since it is a newer device and has USB Type C capabilities.

I understand the normal approach here is to test and verify compatibility using a TUSB8044 eval board http://www.ti.com/tool/tusb8044rgcevm

Nevertheless I am interested to understand TI opinion on device compatibility differences between the TUSB8040 and TUSB8044.

Thank you!
