SN65HVD1040: SN65HVD1040 and SN65HVD256

Part Number: SN65HVD1040
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN65HVD256, , SN65HVD255, TCAN1042-Q1

Hi team,

The customer would like to know if SN65HVD1040 and SN65HVD256 can be replaced each other.

He has his schematic in the attachment.

I found the differences for the two devices was 5 pin.  Is my understand correct?

Can the two devices be replaced each other?

Are the the customer's schematics correct?

  • Hi Mickey,

The customer's two schematics are correct, but generally isn't possible to interchange SN65HVD1040 and SN65HVD256. The reason is as you mentioned - SN65HVD1040 uses pin 5 as an output (for a common-mode voltage reference) and SN65HVD256 uses that pin as a power supply input. Instead, you could use SN65HVD255 as a replacement since it's pin 5 is a no connect.

I'm not sure what the customer's goal is in choosing these two devices, but we also do have newer CAN transceivers like TCAN1042-Q1 that could be used. This family has a few different pinout variants, so you could choose a version with a "VIO" power supply input on pin 5 (so that it is p2p with HVD256) or you could choose a version with pin 5 as a "no connect" (so that it is p2p with HVD1040). The newer devices also have several other advantages over the older portfolio (higher fault tolerance, better transient protection, better EMC performance, support for higher data rates, etc.).

    Best regards,
    Max
