SN65HVD3083E: Total current in operation

Hi

The short circuit output current is 250mA and it is defined in TIA/EIA-485A Standard.

Does it mean there is possibility of 250mA current flowing when driver's output are shorted each other (in other words, Vod = 0V)?

BestRegards

  • Hello,

Yes, the maximum current input or output from the RS-485 lines would be limited to 250 mA in the event of a short-circuit. This maximum current would occur in a worst-case scenario like shorting a "low" line to +12 V (the maximum supported voltage) or a "high" line to -7 V (the minimum supported voltage). If A and B are shorted to one another, I would generally expect the output current to be slightly lower since it will be limited by the output resistance of the driver circuit. (You can get an idea of what to expect by looking at the output voltage versus current curve given in Figure 16 of the datasheet.)

    Regards,
