SN65HVD231: 12V CAN Bus voltage level input

Part Number: SN65HVD231
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TCAN332

Hi there:

I'd like to check a application for my customer, does SN65HVD213QD could accept the 12V CAN BUS voltage input directly?

Or the voltage level shiftier is needed?

Any recommendation solution we could provide customer reference?

The following is reference block from customer provided.

  • Hello Kay,

SN65HVD231Q requires that the bus signals operate in a -2 V to +7 V range. Normally CAN bus signals will be within this range, although if shifts in ground potential are present between nodes the bus voltage range can increase. If the application needs to support up to 12 V to accommodate this then a different transceiver could be selected. An example of a 3.3-V transceiver (like 'HVD231) that supports operation across a +/- 12 V range is TCAN332.

    Regards,
    Max
