TCA8418E-EVM: Cannot get evaluation to run on MSP-EXP430G2ET

Part Number: TCA8418E-EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP-EXP430G2ET, , UNIFLASH, TCA8418E

I have a TCA8418E-EVM board, and MSP-EXP430G2ET board. I have configured the jumpers on the MSP-EXP430G2ET  for HW-UART mode.

I couldn't get the TCA8418E_Flasher.bat script provided with the eval board to run (in win 10 or 7) - just says it can't find FET. I therefore used UniFlash 5.0 which appeared to program the binary to the MSP-EXP430G2ET ok.

However, when I try to run the TCA8418E-EVM GUI (again tried win 7 and 10), it responds with Could Not Detect COM port. My PC is definitely showing the 2 COM ports (debug and application), so should work surely?

  • Hey Ben,

    1) just want to double check, did you restart your PC after installing the GUI? (Silly I know, but this usually solves most problems.....)

    2) Are you following the user guide set up instructions? Section 5.2 walks through the firmware set up and figure 10 should be what you see after you successfully upload the MSP firmware.

    3) Can you also verify which version of the MSP-EXP430G2ET you are using? (Rev 1.5?)

    Thanks,
    -Bobby
  • Hi Ben,

I'll mark this thread closed for now since I believe the matter is being discussed in parallel via email.  To summarize, though, we are seeing similar issues when using later versions of the MSP430 board, and so we'll need some time to investigate further and figure out if an update to the firmware included in the GUI install package is needed.  In the interim, we will see if we can send you a board that we know works to get you up and running while we continue the debug efforts on our end.

  • Thanks for this, I appreciate your efforts. Frankly I'm not very impressed though, I expect a vendor eval board for something as simple as this to just work out of the box with minimal setup. I don't find these kind of problems with AD or ST for example...
